What You Will Do The Project Engineer working for the Plutonium Facilities Engineering (PFE) organization is one of the few technical personnel involved through the entire lifespan of a project. The Project Engineer is expected to meet with customers and users of Los Alamos National Lab's Plutonium Facility (PF-4) to understand and develop Statements of Need, and Scope(s) of Work to resolve technical facility issues, enhance process or equipment/facility performance, and increase reliability of the Plutonium Facility. These technical issues may be modifications to the facility, replacement of major equipment, changes to facility layout, or installation of new equipment or processes. Once the Scope of Work is developed, approved, and understood by all project team members the Project Engineer then engages Design Engineers and System Engineers to develop the technical solution to the issue. The Project Engineer facilitates and champions the design development, design review, and design acceptance while working with internal and external subject matter experts. Once the design package is developed, and approved, the Project Engineer then engages with Work Execution and Construction Management to implement the design. During design implementation the Project Engineer manages change control to the approved design. Should any sort of deviation from the design be encountered during implementation the Project Engineer manages the engineering response to those deviations. During all steps and phases of the project the Project Engineer is expected to ensure the technical solutions continue to meet the technical need or the facility user(s), that the project is indeed solving the customer's/user's issue. At the completion of the project the Project Engineer is responsible for closeout activities, collecting all documentation, test report, designs, drawings, etc generated during the lifespan of the project and compiling them in accordance with LANL's Document Control mandates. The Project Engineer may be expected to work on projects both inside and outside the nuclear facility footprint. Projects can vary from modifications to accredited nuclear safety systems, to renovations of office spaces, and everything in between. Regardless of project size, complexity, duration, or cost the Project Engineer is expected to be the primary champion and facilitator of all technical aspects of the project, and is responsible for the delivery and maintenance of high-quality technical design documentation throughout the entire life of the project. This position will work with internal (LANL) and external (subcontract) resources to execute projects. This position will have a direct impact on the United States' nuclear weapons stockpile stewardship and nuclear weapons modernization programs. * Awareness of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies.
* Awareness of project and process nuclear facility engineering practices.
* Basic understanding of technical scope development and entry-level understating of common engineering design document deliverables.
* Basic understanding of design development and design review process (30%/60%/90%) with limited prior experience facilitating design reviews.
Training/Certifications: Current registration as an Engineer in Training (EIT) is highly desirable. Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and 0 to 2 years of practical work experience necessary. This position may be subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job. DOE 426.2 requires a BS degree, 2 years job related experience and 1 year non-reactor nuclear experience for technical support personnel who perform work independently at nuclear facilities. The Engineer 1 position would be expected to be able to obtain the nuclear experience on the job if they do not have it upon hire before becoming fully-qualified. Desired Qualifications: * Awareness of applicable codes and standards in common use at DOE and DOD facilities (ASME, NQA-1, IBC, IEBC, IEEE, NFPA, etc).
* Awareness of applicable LANL standards (Engineering Standards Manual (ESM), Conduct of Engineering, Conduct of Maintenance, Conduct of Operations, etc).
* Project Engineering Qualifications Test: All Project Engineers will be required to pass an Oral Qualifications Test within 12 months of their hiring date.
* Administrative Subcontract Technical Representative: All Project Engineers will be required to be qualified as a Administrative Subcontract Technical Representative (AdSTR) within 3 months of their hiring date.
