What You Will Do Reporting to the Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for Physical Sciences Directorate, the Materials Science and Technology (MST) Division Leader (DL) will work closely with the ALD to provide leadership, vision, strategic and tactical planning, and management for high quality research and development across the Materials Science and Technology Division as well as stewarding the Materials for the Future Pillar for the Laboratory. The DL position requires customer service orientation, demonstrated leadership qualities, and the ability to interact effectively at all levels. The successful candidate will be expected to lead by example and to nurture a productive, stimulating, and cost-effective work environment. The DL will be responsible for the scientific and technical leadership and management of the Division's staff, activities, and facilities. The DL must nurture an intellectual environment conducive to scientific research, development and innovation that retains the highest caliber scientific staff. The DL helps to ensure the implementation of all applicable safety, environment, security, and quality, compliance and administrative policies and procedures and will be responsible for maintaining effective working relationships with MST Division managers, other Physical Sciences Directorate managers, and managers in all other Directorate's with which MST is a customer. This visionary leader will lead and manage an organization of more than 300 researchers and staff to execute a portfolio of close to $150M per year. The organization is the Laboratory's focal point for structural materials research, development, and application at the Lab and has a significant role in the understanding of plutonium, nuclear fuels, engineered materials, and precision targets for high energy density experiments. MST Division also provides the materials science and technology base needed to maintain confidence in the safety and reliability of the nation's nuclear weapons and applies its technical expertise to a broad range of missions including fundamental science, nuclear energy, fossil energy, threat reduction, and conventional defense challenges. The Division has strong national and international collaborations with academia, industry, and other national laboratories. In addition to technical leadership and management, the division leader will be expected to develop personnel, recruit, and retain critical skills in the workforce, control costs, and support diversity, affirmative action, ESH&Q, security, and community relations. What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: * Demonstrated record of excellent leadership, management, and supervisory skills including the development of personnel.
* Record of scientific leadership as evidenced by successful direction of a materials program of significant impact.
* Experience in developing and implementing strategies to foster science and build technical capability, develop research programs, and improve technical infrastructure and facilities.
* Integrity, the ability to establish trust, commitment to scientific and technical excellence, delivery on commitments and operational effectiveness.
* Demonstrated record of excellent fiscal management including budget preparation and oversight.
* Demonstrated experience in planning and managing projects.
* Experience building collaborative relationships across LANL, with other national laboratories, universities, and/or industry.
* Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers; and strong teaming skills.
* Demonstrated commitment to Laboratory goals in assuring a healthy, safe, and secure working environment and successful management of high output scientific facilities requiring stringent environmental, safety and health standards.
* Demonstrated commitment to diversity and affirmative action.
* Ability to obtain a Q-clearance, which typically requires US citizenship Education: Minimum requirement is a bachelor's degree in science or engineering and 15 years related experience. Ph.D. or M.S. in materials science, physics, metallurgy, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in related areas that are relevant to the mission of the Division is preferred. Desired Qualifications: * Knowledge of the materials capabilities across the nation's nuclear weapons complex and DOE National Laboratory network.
* Understanding of how the materials science portfolio broadly supports LANL's national security science mission areas including Nuclear Weapons, Energy, and Global Security Programs.
* Knowledge of, and networks within, LANL program offices.
* Knowledge of external funding agencies (DOE, NNSA, DoD, DHS, etc.), including significant experience and engagement with programmatic sponsors (programmatic interaction, strategy development, and/or change of station).
* Knowledge of LANL operations, nuclear facilities, and administrative policies and procedures.
* Experience and demonstrated success in managing change; experience leading during times of significant change, mergers, acquisitions, or contract experience.
* Ability to obtain an SCI clearance. Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM with the potential for teleworking from a location within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite will be periodically required. Telework is at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances. *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer. Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status. Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
