Los Alamos National Laboratory is Hiring a Mechanical or Electrical Research Technologist 1/2 (Research Tec with Security Clearance - Now Hiring Near Los Alamos, NM

What You Will Do The Weapons Science & Actinide Separations team within the Materials Synthesis & Integrated Devices group (MPA-11) is seeking multiple candidates for Research Technologist positions. The Research Technologist will provide technical support and work closely with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technologists, and technicians on mechanical and electrical projects within the team. Principal responsibilities will be to support chemists, chemical engineers, and mechanical engineers in preparation and monitoring of experiments in one or more of the following areas: assisting in mechanical system assembly and maintenance, manufacturing system components, wiring sensors, monitoring long term experiments, gathering and interpreting data, and writing and reviewing technical procedures. Interpersonal communication and teamwork are important elements of this work environment, as is a commitment to LANL's safety and security culture. This position will be filled at either the Research Technologist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. Research Technologist 1 ($81,700 - $133,100)
The successful candidate for Research Technologist 1 will have a general knowledge of science and/or engineering principles and practices and have experience in one or more of the following areas: * Electrical wiring and schematics
* Mechanical design
* Writing procedural documents
* Data analysis and report writing
* Ability to work independently on tasks while remaining on schedule
Research Technologist 2 ($90,000 - $147,100)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, a candidate at the 2 level will also possess experience in the above areas and some of the qualifications listed below: * Ability to interpret, prepare, and analyze data.
* Read and write electrical wiring and schematics.
* Ability to determine faults and problematic areas within mechanical devices.
* Ability to initiate and work independently while remaining on schedule.
What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Technical: * The ability to work as a team member to help design, assemble, test and operate mechanical or electrical systems associated with overall project goals.
* Demonstrated proficiency in interpreting and formulating technical requirements, preparing research documentation, providing peer-review, and creating/revising procedures.
* Demonstrated ability to characterize system performance, identify problems and troubleshoot.
* Proficiency with basic experimental instrumentation.
Collaboration: * Demonstrated ability to work closely with teams. Must be able to build and maintain effective relationships with internal team members and collaborators.
* Demonstrated ability to meet schedule and deliverables for technical projects.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision, and exercise personal initiative.
Communication: * Demonstrated ability to document technical laboratory work and archive data for consumption by others.
* The ability to communicate effectively with engineers, scientists, technicians, technologists, and students across multiple disciplines.
Additional Job Requirements for Research Technologist 2: In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires: * Demonstrated depth of knowledge in the area of practice acquired by experience, certification, and/or formal education.
* Demonstrated knowledge of industry, regulatory, DOE/National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) complex codes, standard, and/or criteria pertinent to the area of research.
* Demonstrated technical leadership in area of experience.
* Demonstrated supervision of projects and personnel as part of a larger project or program.
Education/Experience at Research Technologist 1: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Education/Experience at Research Technologist 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Desired Qualifications: * Experience designing and building basic mechanical equipment, e.g., experience using computer-aided design software, using hand tools, performing engineering calculations.
* Experience working with additive manufacturing equipment.
* Experience designing and building basic electrical connections, e.g., experience soldering, designing circuits, interfacing sensors with data acquisition systems.
* Experience working with chemical solutions and chemical diagnostic instrumentation.
* Knowledge of engineering principles and basic technical responsibilities, including design and systems technology, within designated discipline.
* Experience with planning, coordinating, and preparation of equipment or work specifications, bid evaluations and award recommendations for equipment.
Note to Applicants: Both of these positions will have multiple tasks with shifting priorities. The candidate will need to remain flexible to schedule changes and be willing to learn new tasks and skills. Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM. Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
