What You Will Do The Shock and Detonation Physics Group (M-9) is looking for a hard-working, organized person to fill a Research Tec position. The Shock and Detonation Physics Group (M-9) delivers precision data, advanced diagnostics, and high-fidelity models for dynamic properties of energetic and inert materials to Los Alamos National Laboratory and the nation. Among the group's technical competencies are detonation theory, model development and supporting experimentation; dynamic and shock response of a broad range of materials, including studies at national user facilities; shockwave compression of organic matter and shock-induced chemistry; static high-pressure science; and ultrafast shock and chemical dynamics studies. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting operations in multiple facilities that contain powder and gas gun systems including single-stage powder guns and two-stage gas guns. The team also conducts experiments at other facilities and firing sites at Los Alamos and at other national laboratories. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Executing gas-gun experiments, including high explosive (HE) Handling and Assembly/Disassembly, fielding diagnostics, working with high pressure and laser systems, making precision measurements on inert and high explosive materials, and target fabrication. Becoming Qualified as HE handler and HE assembly/disassembly operations Keeping detailed records including, but not limited to, maintaining inventories of single-use items, hoist and rigging logs, and other maintenance/upgrade activities. Interacting positively with a team composed of scientists, technologist, technicians, and visitors. Performing work in a safe and secure manner. What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: * Willingness to work with high explosives, radiological materials, and large, complex mechanical systems.
* Demonstrated strong mechanical skills.
* Demonstrated proficiency trouble-shooting/ repair of mechanical, high-pressure, vacuum, and electrical systems.
* Basic mathematical skills.
* Experience with standard office software ( e-mail, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
* Strong written and oral communication skills.
* Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with technical and operations personnel.
* Demonstrated excellent organizational and planning skills.
* Demonstrated ability to work in a highly regulated, safety, Integrated Work Document (IWD) and checklist driven environment.
Education/Experience Position requires an Associate's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Desired Qualifications: * Active DOE Q Clearance or the ability to obtain Active DOE Q Clearance
* Significant machining experience
* Experienced high explosive handler and assembly/disassembly worker, ideally with current LANL qualification.
* Proficiency operating electronic recording equipment, such as oscilloscopes
* Crane and forklift operator
Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM. Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances. *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer. Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status. Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
