What You Will Do This position will be filled at either the Scientist 3 or Scientist 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. The Space Science and Applications Group (ISR-1) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a mid-career to senior scientist to lead efforts related to the study of radiation effects on microelectronics in space systems in support of ongoing programs and future projects. The position is expected to be filled at the Scientist 3 or 4 level, with the higher level carrying greater expectation to champion and coordinate radiation effects capability within ISR and across the Laboratory. The selected candidate will provide high-impact support to some or all of the following activities: * Provide subject matter expertise to support radiation testing, hardness assurance assessments, and error rate prediction for space systems and components.
* Assist in formulation of radiation hardness requirements for space systems.
* Build and maintain multi-disciplinary teams to execute cross-functional projects, including mentoring of technical staff.
* Research topics in space radiation effects such as use of commercial components, part tolerance, mitigation techniques, shielding properties, the space environment, or others.
ISR-1 is part of the Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) division at LANL. We specialize in the application of space-based instrumentation for national security and basic science missions. Our work receives funding and requirements from the DOE, DOD, NASA, and other government agencies. Projects are executed through a close interaction among all disciplines of engineers, technicians, and scientists which fosters a highly creative and dynamic research and development environment. Also, ISR activities support all aspects of R&D, from concept development to operational support after launch or field deployment. Scientist 3: ($119,200 - $201,100) * Working knowledge of radiation effects on micro-electronics and hardening techniques for space systems.
* Working knowledge of the natural space environment and error rate calculation tools .
* Demonstrated experience with radiation effects testing and a working knowledge of radiation hardness assurance guidelines and test standards.
* Demonstrated ability to formulate and communicate technical results.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaborate as a member of a diverse team.
Scientist 4: ($143,100 - $248,200) In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you must meet the following criteria: * Recognized subject matter expert in the field of radiation effects on electronics, demonstrated by journal publications, patents, or contributions to major reports.
* Demonstrated experience leading R&D projects, defining strategies, building cross-organizational teams, managing budgets and staff, and securing multi-year funding.
* Proven experience with mission or system design, performance modeling and assessment, requirements specification, integration, or testing.
* Demonstrated experience working with U.S. government stakeholders for space systems.
What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: * Working knowledge of radiation effects on micro-electronics and hardening techniques for space systems.
* Working knowledge of the natural space environment and error rate calculation tools.
* Demonstrated experience with radiation effects testing and a working knowledge of radiation hardness assurance guidelines and test standards.
* Demonstrated ability to formulate and communicate technical results.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaborate as a member of a diverse team.
* Ability to obtain DOE Q and TS/SCI security clearances.
* Education/Experience at lower level:
* Position requires a Master's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Master's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 12 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Desired Qualifications: Have current DOE Q and TS/SCI security clearances. Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM. Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A. Clearance: Q/SCI(Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances. *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer. Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status. Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
