What You Will Do The National Security Earth Science Group (EES-17) supports national security by providing technical expertise in the geodynamics of Earth's crust. The group is subdivided into four teams: Geomechanics, Spatial Science to Enhance National Security, Geophysical Explosion Monitoring, and Containment. Within EES-17 we do theoretical, modeling and experimental work to improve our capabilities for computing solutions to address challenges in dynamic response of rock and/or rock-like materials resulting from explosive and hydraulic stresses, earthquake hazards, treaty verification, clean energy development, environmental management, nuclear waste disposal, and resource extraction impacts. The Group is characterized by a balance of basic and applied research, which leads to the development of novel and integrated capabilities that are then utilized to address practical problems for sponsors in multiple offices in DOE, other federal agencies, and a variety of industries. EES-17 is looking for a creative Graduate Research Associate to join our interdisciplinary team. The successful candidate will take a role in numerical modeling of rock and rock-like materials (e.g., pressed powders and high explosives), brittle materials fracturing, interface rheology, shock modeling and seismic wave propagation. Experience with numerical modeling, programming, and/or an understanding of computational methods is desired. This position will require motivation to achieve in an independent work environment and the communication skills to interact with a multidisciplinary, integrated team.
