What You Will Do The National Security Earth Science Group (EES-17) supports national security by providing technical expertise in the geodynamics of Earth's crust. The group is subdivided into four teams: Geomechanics, Spatial Science to Enhance National Security, Geophysical Explosion Monitoring, and Containment. Within EES-17 we do theoretical, modeling and experimental work to improve our capabilities for computing solutions to address challenges in dynamic response of rock and/or rock-like materials resulting from explosive and hydraulic stresses, earthquake hazards, treaty verification, clean energy development, environmental management, nuclear waste disposal, and resource extraction impacts. The Group is characterized by a balance of basic and applied research, which leads to the development of novel and integrated capabilities that are then utilized to address practical problems for sponsors in multiple offices in DOE, other federal agencies, and a variety of industries. EES-17 is looking for a creative Graduate Research Associate to join our interdisciplinary team. The successful candidate will take a role in numerical modeling of rock and rock-like materials (e.g., pressed powders and high explosives), brittle materials fracturing, interface rheology, shock modeling and seismic wave propagation. Experience with numerical modeling, programming, and/or an understanding of computational methods is desired. This position will require motivation to achieve in an independent work environment and the communication skills to interact with a multidisciplinary, integrated team. What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: * Candidates with background/experience in the following areas are invited to apply:
* General knowledge of continuum mechanics
* General knowledge of mechanical behavior of materials in general
* Excellent written and communication skills
* Ability to obtain a Q Clearance which normally requires US Citizenship. Education/Experience: Completion of a Master's degree in science, engineering, mathematics and/or computing within the past 3 years, and have not yet been accepted into another master's program or Ph.D. program. Must have a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent). Desired Qualifications: * Programming skills in Python, or other relevant scripting language and the ability to adopt and apply new software packages
* Damage and fracture mechanics knowledge
* Demonstrate ability to work with minimal supervision and as a team. Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM. No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
