The ACLU of Southern California is seeking a Human Resources Generalist. Under the supervision of the Human Resources Manager, the Human Resources Generalist ensures that HR programs and practices are documented, completed with accuracy on a timely basis, comply with state and federal labor laws, ACLU SoCal policies and procedures, and the collective bargaining agreement. The Human Resources Generalist aids in the administrative functions of the Human Resources department, including talent acquisition and facilitating the onboarding process. Additionally, the position will maintain accurate HR files including employee information and necessary documentation. The Human Resources Generalist assists with the execution of a wide range of sensitive and confidential matters while ensuring a high level of customer service in support of ACLU SoCal’s mission and strategic initiatives.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Talent Acquisition and Retention: Ensure that open positions are filled on a timely basis with qualified candidates and that the on-boarding process enhances employees’ assimilation into the organization.
  • HR Administrative Support: Support the administrative functions of the human resources departments.
  • Legal Compliance: Keep abreast of changes in federal and state labor law and ensure that HR policies and processes are compliant, applied consistently throughout the organization and that changes are documented and communicated on a timely basis.
  • Employee Relations: Maintain an atmosphere where employees feel comfortable coming to Human Resources for questions and concerns. Ensure that employee complaints or concerns are brought the attention of the HR Manager and/or Chief Human Resources Officer. Assist with events that enhance employee satisfaction such as staff appreciation programs, holiday parties, and ACLU SoCal victory celebrations. Provide feedback on the success of each event.
  • Compensation Administration: Verify positions within designated departments are correctly classified and in the correct salary range. When appropriate, work with managers in evaluating employee’s individual salaries to ensure that pay is appropriate based on skills, experiences, job responsibilities and performance.
  • Workers’ Compensation: Serve as first point of contact for work-related injuries. Promote a safe work environment to maintain a low mod-rating. Process claims in consultation with the HR Manager and assist with tracking claim activity.
  • Leaves of Absences: Support the HR Specialist/Generalist to ensure that Leaves of Absences are properly communicated, documented, and tracked according to state and federal requirements and company policy.
  • Committees: Participate on committees as needed.
  • Personnel Files: Ensure that Personnel Files are up to date, organized and maintained in accordance with Federal and State requirements.
  • Terminations: Ensure terminations are well documented, processed within state regulations and performed with dignity. Conduct exit interviews.
  • Perform other duties as required.

    • Consistently identify and disrupt ways in which bias plays out in work and/or team.
    • Consistently set racial equity outcomes, goals, and performance measures for team, department, or organization, and develop and successfully implement plans to achieve them.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Human Resources, Business, or Organization Development. HR designation such as SHRM preferred.
  • At least three years Human Resources experience coordinating Human Resources systems and recruitment. Prior non-profit experience a plus.
  • Exceptional time management and organization.
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner.
  • Familiarity with human resource policies and procedures to meet organizational needs and goals.
  • Ability to keep information confidential.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Thorough understanding of all areas of information systems with a technical understanding of at least one commercial HRIS product is preferred.
  • Passionate about civil liberties and civil rights. A professional approach and a commitment to a workplace that values and respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstances.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

The annual salary for this position is $64,000 - $77,000. Benefits include medical, dental, vision insurance for staff members and their eligible dependents; life, long-term disability, and short-term disability insurance; 401(k) plan with employer match; ample vacation and sick pay with 22 paid holidays.
