Motion Picture Industry Pension & Health Plans is Hiring a Director, Pension & Retirement Benefits Near Los Angeles, CA

Motion Picture Industry Pension & Health Plans (MPI) has an immediate opportunity for the key role of Retirement Benefits Director, a member of the Senior Leadership Team, reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, responsible for full oversight of the retirement benefits department and all pension functions.

Please note, this is an onsite position at our offices in Studio City, CA. MPI requires employees to be vaccinated against Covid-19 with exceptions as required by law. Local candidates only, relocation assistance is not provided.

The Director will manage and administer both a defined benefit (DB) pension plan and a defined contribution (DC) plan. The Director must maintain an in-depth knowledge of pension benefit processing, pension regulations, as well as Trust Fund rules and organizational policies.

Responsibilities include:

A successful candidate will have pension or benefit administration experience, including an ability to interpret procedures and policies in accordance with ERISA, HIPAA, DOL, IRS, Summary Plan Descriptions, and other organizational rules.

  • Coordinates monthly, quarterly, and annual processes, such as 1099R, and state tax reporting, retirement seminars, 5500 and SSA schedules, tax and annuity table updates in system, production of annual benefit statements, annual and quarterly allocations, etc.
  • Reviews and approves various benefits processes, calculations, and disbursements, including retirements, minimum distributions, QDRO and annuity conversions, etc.
  • Resolves benefit and payment issues and assists with participant counseling on complex and/or sensitive cases.
  • Develops and presents retirement education materials to participants, including contributing articles to the quarterly participant newsletter.
  • Directs and assists in the handling and preparing of benefit appeals to the Board of Directors.
  • Supervises the work of the teams involved in benefit inquiries, application fulfillment, reconciling and producing monthly pension disbursements, weekly DC withdrawal requests, and maintenance of retirement account balances.
  • Ensures delivery of excellent participant services by providing guidance, training, and development of team members.
  • Performs complex benefits analysis and approves payment actions.
  • Works with IT to maintain cyclical processes such as payment reconciliations, quarterly state filings, annual 1099R IRS filings, supporting reports for Form 5500 filings, and annual statements for Plan participants.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years multi-employer pension benefit experience including pension processing; third-party administration or Taft-Hartley experience strongly preferred.
  • Progressive level of management experience, including at least 5 years leading and managing staff.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills and a proactive approach to building working relationships with all levels of personnel and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with changing priorities, communicate changes in process or benefits, as well as adhering to reporting and other deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail and high standards in quality and accurate reporting.
  • Strong leadership traits to inspire and motivate the team, embracing diversity of thought, background, and experience.
  • Intermediate proficiency level in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint required, as well as a working knowledge of multi-employer DB and DC recordkeeping systems, such as Sagitec or Vitech V3 preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.

The anticipated base salary for this position is $180,000-$220,000 annually. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held.
