Position: Executive Director of Human Resources
The Executive Director of Human Resources will provide executive-level leadership, strategic guidance and practical solutions to all aspects of Elite School Management human resources operations. Major areas of responsibility include recruitment, selection, and retention of employees; employee benefits; employee relations; and workplace investigations and grievances, to include Title IX. The office also oversees licensure, employee counselling, supervisory consultation, and performance management. The Executive Director leads HR staff, manages a department budget, and administers HR software solutions and HR contractual services. 
SUMMARY:
The Executive Director of Human Resources will work closely with the CEO and the Senior Executive Team, Departmental Team and the HR Team to collaboratively understand the unique needs and challenges of the organization. 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop customized HR solutions to meet the objectives of Elite School Management.
HR Strategy Development: 
Employee engagement: Create a positive and engaging work environment that promotes employee satisfaction, motivation and productivity. This will include developing employee recognition programs and proving training and development opportunities. 
Compliance and Risk Management: Ensure that Elite School Management complies with all relevant HR laws and regulations, Lake Superior State University (LSSU) and the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) standards as it relates to school personnel in conjunction with school leadership. Including wage and hour laws, discrimination laws and safety regulations. Also responsible for identifying and mitigating HR-related risks and liabilities. 
HR Technology and Systems: Maintain all current HR related platforms and sites to ensure accurate personnel data and compliances. 
Organizational Leadership Development and Succession Planning:
  • Attend the Detroit Service Learning Academy Board meetings as requested in order to support the needs of the district as it relates to school personnel.
  • Advise and assist the Executive Team members on personnel matters, school departments and employee standards and practices.
  • Educate executive team members and school leaders on school compliance as well as federal, state and local regulations.
  • Recommend and conduct various management/leadership trainings upon request.
  • Advise and assist school leadership with job design and position structure; staff forecasting throughout the district and organization.
  • Collaborates with executive leadership to define and align the HR strategies to support the organizations long-term mission and goals; identifies ways to support this mission through talent management 
  • Work directly with the Labor Law General Counsel to ensure federal, state and local employment regulatory compliance laws.
  • Collaborates with the CEO, executive team and school leadership to establish a sound succession plan that corresponds to the overall company and school mission.
Human Resource Compliance & Development:
  • Guide the overall management of staff position compliance and employment processes, ensuring federal, state and local law regulations and standards are met and the organization's equal opportunity and diversity goals are met.
  • Research and recommend Safeschools development training for all employees, independent contractors and temporary staff that will work within the school district.
  • Design and direct all hiring processes and procedures for all school positions; properly classify positions for the purpose of ensuring consistent compliance practices within the district. (qualified, proper placement based on endorsement certification requirements)
  • Identify legal requirements and government reporting regulations that affect Human Resources.
  • Investigate and resolve staff complaints in order to promote a fair and healthy work environment throughout the organization.
  • Collaborate with the school superintendent to ensure timely employee evaluations; oversee the evaluation process to ensure fairness, equitability and non-bias responses, review and approval of all performance improvement plans (PIP).
  • Responsible for completing the State CEPI/ REP (Registry of Educational Personnel) reports annually.
  •  Ensure background/fingerprinting compliance regulations are followed as regulated by Board policy, federal, state and local law regulations.
  • Provide professional flexible leadership support to all members of the executive team and school leadership.
  • Guide the professional certification processes throughout the school district (employee certification and license changes/expiration dates) to ensure certified staff are appropriately placed according to Federal and State regulations.
  • Guide the compensation and benefit programs (classification of jobs, payment of wages, health insurance/open enrollment process, worker's compensation).
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Strong knowledge of employment and benefit laws at both the federal and state levels.
  • Supervisory skills and personal characteristics to successfully work with all categories of employees.
  • Experience conducting workplace investigations and providing guidance to directors and leaders regarding employee performance and disciplinary matters.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of and experience with varied human resource information systems.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required; Masters or law degree highly preferred.
  • At least ten years of human resource management experience required, with strategic, talent management, and/or business development experience highly preferred.
  • SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP strongly preferred.
