Reports to: Deputy Director and CFO

Level: Director

Direct Reports: Four

Classification: Exempt, Full-Time

Benefits: Full Museum benefits

Schedule: M-F 9-5; non-standard including evenings and weekends

Salary: $105,000.00 or commensurate with experience

About the Dallas Museum of Art:

Established in 1903, the Dallas Museum of Art is among the 10 largest art museums in the country and is distinguished by its commitment to research, innovation, and public engagement. At the heart of the Museum and its programs is its global collection, which encompasses more than 22,000 works and spans 5,000 years of history, representing a full range of world cultures. Located in the heart of the nation’s largest arts district, the Museum welcomes some 600,000 visitors annually and acts as a catalyst for community creativity, engaging people of all ages and backgrounds with a diverse spectrum of programming, from exhibitions and lectures to concerts, literary events, and dramatic and dance presentations. In January 2013, the DMA returned to a free general admission policy and launched DMA Friends, the first free museum membership program in the country, which currently has over 70,000 members. Scope of Position:

The ideal candidate for Director of Human Resources at the Dallas Museum of Art will be a well-rounded Human Resources professional looking to advance their career at a forward thinking, nonprofit institution that serves the DFW Metroplex. The DMA has approximately 250 full and part-time employees ranging from executive leadership, curatorial experts, in-house publication and design teams, to dedicated front line staff who excel at making the museum a safe, welcoming, and accessible space for the community.

The Director of Human Resources is responsible for leading a high-performance, results-oriented HR team that will create, deliver, and manage HR strategy and processes in alignment with DMA’s objectives and strategic vision. This role works closely with each member of the executive team and is instrumental in partnering with key internal stakeholders and consultants to lead the annual Compensation Committee review with the Board of Trustees. In addition, the Director of Human Resources will guide all aspects of recruitment for staff and interns, employee benefits, employee relations, compensation strategy, organizational culture and structure, compliance and risk management, staff and executive learning and development, as well as serve as a trusted partner who can advise leadership when making critical decisions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Enhance staff capacity, diversity, and professionalism to create a performance-driven culture
  • Ensure the DMA’s core values are instilled and embodied in all staff and volunteers, and that those values are the foundation of actions
  • Develop and implement best practice HR strategies and programs by establishing department accountabilities, including talent acquisition and retention, compensation strategy and structure, benefits, records management, succession planning, and employee relations
  • Ensure HR-related compliance by staying abreast of legal changes and regularly monitoring areas of the organization that present potential areas of liability
  • Serve as the HR expert for the organization, using keen judgment when outside counsel and support is needed
  • Manage human resources operations by recruiting top talent, delivering best in class onboarding, training and development, coaching, and counseling
  • Prepare employees for assignments by establishing and conducting orientation and training programs
  • Support leadership by providing human resources advice, counsel, and decisions
  • Maintain the work structure by updating job requirements and job descriptions for all positions
  • Manage Human Resource staff planning, monitoring, and appraising job results through counseling and disciplining employees when necessary
  • Ensure planning, monitoring, and appraisal of employee performance by training managers to coach and discipline employees, scheduling management conferences with employees, hearing and resolving employee grievances, and counseling employees and supervisors
  • Maintain management guidelines by preparing, updating, and recommending Human Resource policies and procedures
  • Maintain employee records by designing a filing and retrieval system, keeping past and current records
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies
  • Monitor organizational turnover and conduct and analyze exit interviews to recommend necessary changes
  • Support the organization’s compensation philosophy plans by conducting periodic surveys, assisting with job evaluations, monitoring and scheduling individual pay actions and recommending, planning, and supporting the implementation of pay structure revisions, as needed
  • Oversees the implementation of benefit plans and maintains the benefit broker relationship
  • Supports the annual 401k audit in partnership with the accounting department and Auditors
  • Administers leave programs including FMLA, Parental Leave, and personal leaves of absence in accordance with federal and organizational policies
  • Leads employee morale events including monthly Coffee Talk, Staff Exhibition Previews, annual Holiday party, and various other staff events
  • Guides the internship recruitment and evaluation process with HR staff support
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

Education, Experience, and Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Human Resources or related field required; advanced degree preferred.
  • PHR or SHRM-CP certification preferred.
  • 4-8 years of Human Resources management preferred.
  • Non-profit experience preferred.
  • Arts or culture organization experience preferred.

  • Critical Evaluation: The ability to interpret information to make business decisions and recommendations through critical thinking, measurement and assessment, research methodology, inquisitiveness and knowledge management.
  • Cultural Effectiveness: The ability to value and consider the perspectives and backgrounds of all parties through adaptability, openness, cultural awareness and respect, diversity and global perspectives.
  • Leadership and Navigation: The ability to direct and contribute to initiatives and processes within the organization through consensus-building, influence and change management that are mission driven and results/goal-oriented.
  • Consultation: The ability to provide guidance to organizational stakeholders using effective problem-solving, analytic reasoning, coaching, people management and project management skills.
