Job Overview
The Office of Advancement (OA) is undertaking a reorganization of its Advancement Services & data-related functions. As a key element of this, OA has created the position of Director, Business Intelligence & Analytics to manage the merger of the existing Reporting Services team and the Data & Analytics Group (DAG) into a single team. This new team will have responsibility for creating, managing, and sustaining a customer-centric operation that is responsive to Advancement staff who require access to reporting and analytics. This role plays a key strategic and leadership role in the continued fostering of the creation of a data-informed culture as a key strategy for the University's $3B capital campaign.
The Director is responsible for ensuring the maintenance of a capacity within OA to provide high-level qualitative and quantitative data and trend analysis that drives the strategic planning and operational effectiveness of key fundraising programs, including principal & transformative gifts, major gifts and annual giving. Specifically, the Director compiles and studies internal and external data and employs data mining, predictive modeling, forecasting and statistical analysis techniques to help identify, classify, understand and cultivate prospects capable of making philanthropic contributions to the university, and evaluates and provides assessments of program effectiveness. The Director is also responsible for timely and accurate reports for university leadership including the Board of Directors, President, Provost, Deans and others.
In creating organizational value in Advancement and Georgetown University, the Director has broad program leadership and management responsibilities including strategic planning, budget development, and how OA leverages the GU360 system to support analytics and operational improvements. The Director is also responsible for performance management and professional development of the combined team, and for contributing to Advancement-wide strategies and tactics on talent recruitment and retention.
Work Interactions
This position reports to the Assistant Vice President for Data Strategy and Operations and leads the two major functions of reporting and data analytics. This position works closely with Development staff and also works closely with the other Advancement directors in Advancement Services, Annual Fund, Alumni Relations, and Marketing & Communications to ensure the provision of excellent customer service. The Director plays a leadership role within the Campaign team. In preparation for the next campaign, the Director is responsible for key initiatives driving the university's $3 billion goal.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience, with demonstrated competencies in data analysis, business intelligence, applied marketing research, sales and/or marketing analysis, social science research and/or similar fields
5 to 7 years of prospect research, development, fundraising, market research and/or relevant experience
At least 4 years of experience gathering, working with, analyzing, evaluating and synthesizing complex and large datasets from various sources and producing highly readable, informative reports required
Supervisory experience - ability to mentor and train others; willingness to share skills and techniques with peers and colleagues
Demonstrated analytical, project design/management and creative problem-solving skills
Solid understanding of relational and object-oriented electronic databases
Ability to take abstract questions and intuitively drill down through complex data to provide concrete quantitative solutions with rapid turnaround
Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities and meet challenging and changing deadlines, while prioritizing and responding to ad hoc queries from senior leadership
Highly developed written and oral communications skills and superior interpersonal skills
High degree of professionalism, diplomacy, poise, ethical sensitivity, discretion and commitment to confidentiality
Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certification:
Fluency in computer technologies, including high level of proficiency and understanding with data mapping, data mining, data visualization and statistical software tools - e/g/. SPSS, SAS, MapPoint, R, Tableau
Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel
Knowledge of specialized research databases and other resources
Broad knowledge of - and experience in the use of - research materials, including online informational databases
Experience and/or knowledge of specialized data sources relevant to fundraising - e.g., s WealthEngine, Wealth-X, and iWave
Advanced proficiency in statistical concepts, data visualization and/or analysis tools and languages - e.g., Tableau, R, Python, SQL -
Strong information presentation skills, both in writing and in visuals - e.g., Word, Powerpoint, and Illustrator
Experienced and comfortable presenting and facilitating conversations with executive-level colleagues
Preferred qualifications
Master's degree
Experience within a higher education setting and/or fundraising office
Practical experience working with the Salesforce platform and/or exposure to point-and-click or SOQL/Apex Salesforce development
