As an integral part of Campus Ministry since 1968, Georgetown's Jewish chaplaincy ("Jewish Life") aspires to advance the life and growth of every self-defined Jewish student through building their sense of belonging in Jewish campus community, literacy in Jewish religious texts and traditions, engagement in Jewish communal leadership and multi-faith social justice. Together with diverse faculty, staff, and students, we empower one another to progress along our personal journeys and to discern our unique roles in delivering a brighter future for the Jewish people and for the world.
The Interim Director for Jewish Life provides essential leadership to this work for the 2022-23 academic year while the university undertakes a comprehensive search for a permanent director. They attend primarily to the spiritual and pastoral needs of the Jewish community at Georgetown through services and retreats, religious education, care and counseling, and the promotion of interreligious understanding, with particular attention to the ongoing work of rebuilding community.
Work Interactions
Reporting to the Managing Director, the Interim Director supervises other Jewish Life staff, including the Jewish chaplaincy to the Law Center and the Medical Center, as well as an Associate Director (now in recruitment). They receive programmatic and communications support from a shared central team, and work in regular collaboration with other Campus Ministry colleagues.
The Interim Director oversees a team of student interns, and advises both the Jewish Student Association and the Bayit living-learning community. As well, they engage involved and uninvolved students, parents of current students and other community members, potential students and their families, alumni, local/international community organizations, and university partners.
Qualifications
Rabbinical Ordination from an accredited seminary (Ph.D. in Religious Studies - beneficial but not required
5 years of post-seminary ministerial experience, including liturgy, pastoral counseling or spiritual care, administration, supervision, and evaluation
Commitment to interfaith ministry, knowledgeable about religious traditions, and appreciative of the Roman Catholic tradition and Jesuit identity of Georgetown
Competence in program development, administration and events management, and sophisticated verbal and writing skills
Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word and basic Excel
Familiarity with general office equipment
Skill in web content and social media management
Ability to work collaboratively with administrators, faculty and staff from all areas of the university, and across cultural and religious traditions
Reliability and self-direction, personable and professional, trustworthy and competent, and flexible and adaptable
Ability to effectively manage projects and tasks, and strong attention to detail
