The Nueces Center for Mental Health and Intellectual Disabilities (MHID) is dedicated to helping the residents of Nueces County who are living with mental illness and/or intellectual and developmental disabilities. We serve over 10,000 people each year with psychiatric and behavioral health care outpatient services, counseling, training, employment assistance, housing support, homeless outreach, children's mental health care and more.

Salary: "Please note that the job posting rate for this position is $18.92 to $20.26, the salary offered will follow the starting salary guidelines which are typically made at or near the minimum of the salary range. However, a salary may be negotiated above the minimum range depending on applicable years of experience and qualifications."

Full-Time, 40 Hour Work Week, Paid Bi-weekly

General Description

Responsible for delivering outreachservices to improve the support network and ongoing care for individuals facingsubstance use disorders, mental health challenges, and medical needs.Responsibilities involve collaborating with colleagues to secure communityresources, disseminating program information to recruit program participantsand presenting information to the community. Increase opportunities forsubstance users, including opioid and alcohol users, to reduce harms related tosubstance use. Increase retention in substance use and mental health servicesand help address medical needs. Works under moderate supervision with limitedlatitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor'sdegree from an accredited college or university with a major in psychology,social work, medicine, nursing, rehabilitation, counseling, sociology, humangrowth and development, physician assistant, gerontology, special education,educational psychology, early childhood education or early childhood. Havelived experience with mental health and substance use including injection druguse, speaks openly about personal recovery and can identify as a peer. May beliving with HIV or HCV. Can speak openly about gender and sexual diversity. Mayhave lived experience with housing instability and homelessness. Meet thequalification to obtain a Community Health Worker certification through TexasHealth and Human Services within 6 months of entering position. Must havereliable transportation. May use personal vehicle to conduct business. Musthave a valid driver's license, liability insurance and a good driving record.

Preferred:May be licensed or certified as a Recovery Coach, Peers Support, LCDC, licensednurse or medical staff, social workers, or other substance use related fields. 2years' experience in management of a division or department relevant to theassignment. Bilingual.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Abilityto communicate effectively, both in wiring and orally.
  • Abilityto develop a positive rapport with the targeted population.
  • Knowledgeof community resources.
  • Knowledgeand competent in discussing HIV, HCV, and other communicable diseasesassociated with substance use and be able to demonstrate ability to discusssexuality openly and comfortably.
  • Knowledgeableand competent in discussing opioid overdose and be able to demonstrate abilityto train individuals to use overdose reversal medications and harm reductionmaterials.
  • Will obtain TexasDepartment of State Health Services Community Health Worker Certificationwithin six months of hire.
