Modern Classrooms Project is Hiring a Remote HR Manager (Remote)

Start Date: Immediate

Role Type: Full-Time

Background: human resources, payroll and employee benefits management, compensation/market research is a plus, Professional Human Resource Certification is preferred

Location: Remote

Salary: $75,000 and benefits

Who We Are:

The Modern Classrooms Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that empowers educators to build classrooms that respond to every student’s needs. Founded in 2018 by two award-winning teachers, we lead a movement of educators in implementing a self-paced, mastery-based instructional model that leverages technology to foster human connection, authentic learning, and social-emotional growth.

To date, we have reached over 45,000 teachers through our free online course and 6,000 teachers through our Virtual Mentorship Program from over 100 school, district, and state partners. We are an ambitious, idealistic team of 22 full-time staff and we are passionate about what we do.

As our first HR Manager, you will play an important role in making sure that MCP continues to attract and retain talent. This position will be responsible for the day-to-day activities of MCP’s various human resources functions, including onboarding and offboarding, Human Resources Information System (HRIS) administration, benefits, wellness and recognition programs, policies and procedures, and compliance with applicable state and federal labor laws. 

Core Responsibilities:

The HR Manager will report to the Vice President of People and will work in the following areas:

Talent Management & Culture

  • Help build recruitment strategies that incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion practices. 
  • Assist hiring managers with sourcing candidates, evaluating applications, and selecting new staff.
  • Support employee onboarding and offboarding processes.
  • Lead Wellness Programs, including selection of wellness activities and coordination with vendors.
  • Maintain and update the employee handbook and policies manual, making recommendations for best practices for the organization.
  • Support execution and planning of performance evaluations program.
  • Support development of career advancement opportunities and compensation structure.
  • Support planning for staff retreats, team building activities, professional development, and other events that foster a great office culture.

Payroll and Benefits Administration

  • Process twice-monthly payroll for all employees and ensure proper deductions for state and federal taxes, and fringe benefits.
  • Manage the processing and tracking of all benefit programs, including 403b, medical, dental, vision, HSA, and wellness programs. Regularly assess our benefits against the market to ensure they are equitable and competitive.
  • Ensure compliance with legal employment regulations in all operating states and interpret, explain, and apply applicable state and federal laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Work with the VP of People to ensure that we have a proper HRIS that meets our growing business needs.

Contractor Support

  • Manage independent contractor onboarding, including but not limited to: sending and filing signed contracts, setting up or troubleshooting online accounts, working with the finance team on setting up payments, ensuring 1099 are distributed at the end of the tax year, and assisting teams with any onboarding support questions. 

Characteristics of the person we are looking for:

  • 3 years in Human Resources/Employee Relations/People Operations within a fast-paced and high growth environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to be entrusted with sensitive information and conduct daily activities with the utmost professionalism and integrity.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage details, solve problems, and follow through on assignments with minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively with people at all levels of the organization, including staff, consultants, and contractors.
  • Experienced with creating and refining HR processes and procedures.
  • Experienced with incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion values and practices.
  • Comfortable working independently and remotely.
  • Passionate about making the world a better place, particularly through education.
  • Familiarity with developing compensation plans is a plus.
