THE OPPORTUNITY

Title: Director, Human Resources 

Job Type: Full-time Exempt

Reports to: Chief Legal Officer

Location: Austin, TX (Corporate Headquarters located in the Domain)

Summary: Citizens, Inc. is seeking a highly effective Human Resources Director with strong collaboration, strategic planning, problem-solving and communication skills who demonstrates the ability to effectively influence, lead, and act as an agent of change. The HR Director must have strong business acumen, make data driven decisions, and utilize their HR expertise to enable the business. Our HR Director should enjoy the challenge of working with different cultures and backgrounds. Our HR Director must be a culture builder, status quo challenger, and someone who believes that creating a great employee experience is a critical component of a business strategy. The ideal candidate will contribute at both hands-on and strategic levels to enable business achievement, growth, and scalability. 

WHAT YOU WILL GET TO DO

1. Category: Leadership:

  • Provides direction, structure, and oversight of the day-to-day operations of the HR department. 
  • Works closely with company leaders to ensure the company has competitive compensation and benefit plans that position us to obtain and retain the best possible team.
  • Partners with the head of each business unit and the strategic management team to implement human resources policies, procedures, and programs that are aligned with organization goals, mission, and culture, and that they are in compliance with professional standards and legal requirements.
  • Serves as consultant and advisor to the business on HR matters; manages processes related to employee engagement, performance management, talent assessments, leadership development, and succession planning.

2. Category: Compensation

  • Oversees compensation guidelines, policies and execution. Partners with senior business leaders on compensation related matters.
  • Responsible for meeting and/or exceeding budget requirements.

3. Category: Benefits

  • Responsible for benefit administration, including negotiating and administration of health benefits, annual open enrollment and new hire enrollment.

4. Category: Strategic Development

  • Plans, executes, communicates, and maintains the strategy for Talent Acquisition, Diversity & Retention. 
  • Understands business unit strategic priorities and business imperatives and tailors HR solutions to meet those needs.
  • Assist business unit leaders with recruitment; develop ongoing recruitment and candidate-sourcing plans that build a diverse team; and lead onboarding and train incoming employees on general company policies and culture.
  • Participates on entity level project teams.

5. Category: Compliance

  • Coordinates audit responses for area of responsibility.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED [Qualifications; see examples below]

  • Bachelor’s Degree (4-year degree).
  • Minimum of eight to ten years of Human Resources leadership experience, including three years of management experience at a Director level or above
  • 15 years of professional experience
  • 2 years of experience leading a team of HR professionals at a smaller company level (Employees 50- 1,000) with hands on experience
  • Demonstrated project management/change management experience
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, relationship building, consulting, teamwork and leadership experience
  • Must have outstanding written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to think analytically and strategically to identify and solve problems, implement solutions, and advance business initiatives.
  • Outstanding organizational skills, including prioritizing and follow-up and the ability to handle competing demands and priorities.
  • Must be fully proficient with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualification:

  • BA/BS degree in Human Resources or related field
  • Master’s degree 
  • Current SPHR or SHRM-SCP certification
  • Experience helping organizations scale
  • HR experience working in financial services industry
  • Fluent in Spanish
  • Life Insurance: Knowledge of life insurance products, market segments, and marketplaces; ability to apply knowledge of life insurance products, market segments, and marketplaces to meet business goals and objectives.
