TITLE: Controller

This is a unique opportunity for a seasoned accounting professional to oversee a small accounting team within a vital and vibrant organization. Our ideal candidate will have demonstrated strong accounting and supervisory skills and will enjoy “rolling up their sleeves” in accounting, while crafting policies and procedures and utilizing technology to maximize efficiency and productivity. Strong communication and interpersonal skills and a desire to work in a highly collaborative environment characterized by respect and a shared sense of responsibility for making the world a better place are fundamental to this position.

Finance and Accounting Leadership

• Oversee all accounts and reporting systems; ensure compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain internal controls and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.
• Coordinate all audit activity.
• Manage banking, investment, and other financial and accounting relationships.
• Analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements clearly and effectively; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership (Executive Director, Senior Rabbi, Treasurer, and others) abreast of Temple’s financial status.
• Oversee the annual budgeting and planning process, working with Temple’s senior leadership.
• Administer and review all financial plans and compare with actual results to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
• Manage cash flow, forecasting continuously to ensure business needs are met.
• Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with Investment Policy Statement.
• Liaise with Finance and Investment Committees, providing information they require to oversee Temple’s finances.

Team Leadership

• Hire and supervise accounting department staff; where necessary, retool job descriptions to align with departmental needs.
• Leverage strengths of the current finance team members; where necessary, clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs to reach optimal individual and organizational goals.
• Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization.
• Create and promote a positive and supportive work environment characterized by deep respect.

Qualifications

• Personal qualities of integrity, respect, and credibility; a hands-on accountant who will take responsibility for all aspects of finance, working collaboratively with the Executive Director and Board leadership.
• Minimum of a BA or BS in relevant discipline; CPA and/or MBA preferred.
• Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments.
• Technology savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendors; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software. Experience with Abila/Sage/MIP a plus.
• Committed to recruiting, mentoring, training, and retaining a diverse team; the foresight and ability to delegate accordingly.
• Keen analytic, organization, and problem-solving skills, enabling a focus on strategic data interpretation versus simple reporting.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, Board of Trustees, or others.

• Willingness to learn about unique characteristics of synagogue management and fund accounting.

This position reports to the Executive Director.

Supervises

This position provides supervision of the Accounting department, currently consisting of one Staff Accountant and one Senior Accountant and may from time to time work with outside consultants or vendors as well.

Pay: $125,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
