Education Northwest is Hiring a Remote Business Development Director

Who We Are

Education Northwest is a nonprofit applied research, evaluation, and technical assistance organization based in Portland, Oregon. What You Will Be Doing

As a member of the leadership team, the Director will lead and support staff members in developing and maintaining mission-aligned client and partner relationships and opportunities. The Director is responsible for conducting landscape analysis, facilitating the business development planning process, and executing a large-scale federal, state, and foundation pursuit plan. The Director will support staff members in developing scalable product and service offerings that leverage existing organizational strengths and intellectual capital. Core area(s) of expertise include strategy development, partnership cultivation, capture and pursuit, and product and service development. A track record of facilitating business opportunities at the state and federal levels, including the ability to leverage existing relationships with potential state and federal clients, is preferred. This position reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer.

Supervisory Responsibility: None

  • Lead the development and execution of the federal, state, and foundation pursuit strategy.
  • Collaborate with the leadership team and business development leads in setting annual new award targets based on intelligence gathering and landscape analysis. Work with and support program leadership in crafting and executing a strategy to reach targets.
  • Manage a diverse portfolio of relationships with potential clients and partners at the federal, state, and foundation levels and identify opportunities for partnership, visibility, and pursuit.
  • Identify and shepherd the development of new products or services that complement customized research and technical assistance services.
  • Maintain and regularly update a pipeline of existing and developing priority relationships.
  • Communicate in a compelling manner to engage and inspire partners and networks.
  • Build staff members’ capacity to develop partnerships that lead to new mission-aligned opportunities.

What You Should Have:

  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access
  • Bachelor’s degree in business management, communications, public policy, or equivalent experience
  • Experience generating business with federal and state clients, education sector preferred
  • 10 years’ experience in a business development or relationship manager role
  • Experience working in a nonprofit professional services environment preferred
  • Experience leading the development of scalable products and services preferred
  • A consistent track record of strong lateral and direct team management
  • Experience working with partners to reach agreement on relationship and business objectives
  • Ability to influence internal and external audiences and confidently and clearly communicate with organizational leaders at all levels
  • A demonstrated passion for working in a small, fast-paced, entrepreneurial organization

  • In-state and out-of-state travel
  • Position can be based in Washington, D.C.; Portland, Oregon; or a home office anywhere in the United States
