Dolores Street Community Services is Hiring a Remote Controller

Site/Program: Based out of DSCS Administrative Office

Reports to: Director of Finance

Compensation: $90,000-$110,000 annual commensurate with experience. Full-time, exempt position. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, long-term disability, life insurance and optional retirement, flexible spending account, and commuter benefits.

Dolores Street Community Services (DSCS) nurtures individual wellness and cultivates collective power among low-income and immigrant communities to create a more just society. As a multi-issue, multi-strategy organization, we work to improve lives on an individual level as well as affect broader social change by engaging in advocacy and community organizing. We work together across programs to address homelessness, lack of affordable housing, and to support immigrant rights in order to meet the complex needs of our communities and collectively address the root causes of suffering and injustice.

Position Summary

Controller oversees team of accountant associates working toward DSCS' financial goals, assigning projects and tasks to accounting associates. Responsible for ensuring timely and accurate financial operations, accounting practices, fiscal records and financial report preparation. This is a full-time hybrid position with hours Monday - Friday.


Main Responsibilities:

  • Lead the monthly closing of the accounting ledger
  • Participate in and provide significant and necessary support for the annual audits, ensuring compliance with applicable Federal, State and other related regulations, statutes, General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and policies and procedures
  • Ensures that all accounting records and reconciliations are prepared and maintained in accordance with independent auditing standards
  • Prepares various schedules for the Form990
  • Manages day-to-day accounting functions.
  • Oversee the completion of the delegated tasks required to complete month end and year end closing including cut-off procedures, account reconciliations, roll forwards and journal entries.
  • Develop staff by managing performance, setting goals, providing ongoing training, and maintaining strong employee relationships.
  • Performs general accounting functions inherent in the operations of an accounting department, including the preparation of schedules and other analytical reports as requested.
  • Reviews and monitors employee expense reimbursements.
  • Oversees and ensures review of all General Ledger entries submitted by branches are accurate and have sufficient supporting documents.
  • Oversees and ensures monthly reconciliation of Campaign receivables and monitoring of campaign income.
  • Oversees and ensures annual preparation and filing of property exemptions and tax filings.
  • Oversees and ensures proper documentation of all Fixed Asset additions.
  • Facilitating change management as needed to help Association meet continuously evolving agency challenges and opportunities.
  • Coordinates functional coverage for accounting staff time-off due to vacation, illness and other time-off situations.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of and provide guidance and assistance to branch team members in the interpretation of grant agreements, federal grant circulars including Uniform Guidance, GAAP and policies and procedures.
  • Maintain strong relationships with existing grantors, government agencies and external auditors.
  • Work closely with other departments to understand the nature of funding or revenue sources to ensure all documentation complies with applicable Federal, State and other related regulations, statutes, General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and policies and procedures.
  • Oversee an Accounting Team. Assess staff performance, provide feedback, trainings, and create goals and procedures for their division.
  • Advise Organizations on Financial Decisions. Evaluate financial documents for inefficiencies and suggest solutions to problems.
  • In partnership with HR, oversee payroll processing.
  • Prepare monthly reconciliation of asset and liability accounts and related expense accounts.

Other Organizational Duties

  • Participate on the agency's Strategic Leadership Team and other agency committees, as needed
  • Conduct business in accordance with the DSCS Employee Handbook, exercising sound judgment and serving the best interests of the agency and the community
  • Work within the framework of the agency's mission, vision, values, theory of change, and organization's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, restorative justice, trauma-informed work, and language justice.
  • Commit yourself to treating each community member with respect and dignity
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Qualifications and Experience Desired

  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting or related, CPA preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in accounting for a non-profit preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience.
  • Able to meet tight deadlines, driven, self-motivated and possesses high integrity.
  • Minimum of five years of general ledger, month-end close and reconciliation experience.
  • Strong financial analytical skills with a strong ability to identify incongruities and anomalies in balances.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (especially Excel and Sage Intacct).
  • Excellent oral, written, analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to exercise judgment within broadly defined practices and policies.
  • Bilingual in spoken and written Spanish, preferred.
