Job Summary:

The Estimator works closely with the preconstruction team in preparing estimates and lump sum bids for commercial and residential construction projects while maintaining a proper balance between the profitability of the company, subcontractors, and vendor relationships and the achievement of total customer satisfaction.

Essential Functions, Duties, Responsibilities:

  • Provides estimating services which include conceptual, schematic, design development, and construction level estimates.
  • Responsible for creating quantity estimates for new work and ensures that takeoff is accurate and within company guidelines.
  • Responsible for working closely with our clients to gather customers' specific needs.
  • Respond to customer and sales team questions concerning details on the takeoff and/or design; electronic takeoff of plans (Bluebeam, OST, Planswift, Maxwell, or similar).
  • Ability to review specifications, technical and general conditions.
  • Acquires competitive bid work, continuously monitors the marketplace for project/relationship opportunities, and supports marketing and business development in the acquisition of negotiated work.
  • Develops and/or understands the full parameters of the project scope.
  • Performs bidding and estimating project lead tasks and assists in presentation of estimates to clients.
  • Develops a basis of scope for bidding, estimating purposes and assists in negotiation of pricing of subcontractors.
  • Prepares plans for the buyout process for successful lump sum bids and meets quantitative goals with respect to estimating and bidding.
  • Qualifies all estimates and bids relative to scope.
  • Achieves consensus (with customers and/or our operations) relative to the project scope.
  • Maintains cost database and manages workloads according to preconstruction department deadlines, commitments, and priorities.
  • Assist with training and mentoring less experienced estimators and co-op students as appropriate.
  • Fosters positive relationships with internal and external customers, subcontractors, and design professionals.
  • Assists in the development of owner contracts as required.
  • Assists in value engineering and constructability analysis.
  • Joins the project salesperson in de-scope meetings for successful lump sum bids as requested by the responsible salesperson.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Must possess good communication skills with all managers and field personnel so that pertinent information is given out effectively
  • Effective interpersonal skills, energetic, self-motivated and, above-average attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude throughout high volume periods and when working through challenging situations
  • Ability to speak effectively and interact with other clients, vendors, team members, and leadership
  • Provides excellent commitment to client services and provides a strong sense of urgency
  • Proficient in reading blueprints, computer skills and Fundamental knowledge of contract law and project accounting
  • Thorough working knowledge and understanding of all project management control systems (scheduling, estimating, cost control, procurement and business development)

Required Qualifications:

Education/License/Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management or Architectural or equivalent experience
  • Pre-employment drug test, criminal background check, and motor vehicle record required

Experience:

  • Field construction experience (2-5 years, including supervisory skills)
