Who are we looking for? We are looking for an Assistant Controller to lead Clair's core accounting functions. As the third member of the Finance team, you'll have the opportunity to partner with leaders in every area of the business.
Reporting to the Head of Finance, you will play a key role in managing the financial accounting and reporting functions to ensure the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of our financial statements. You will oversee day-to-day accounting activities and provide strategic guidance to support business objectives. You will also lead the annual audit and generally help build a world-class accounting function.
This role requires deep technical accounting expertise and the ability to develop sustainable, best-practice accounting procedures.
Our ideal candidate has a track record of leading significant accounting functions (full-charge accounting, monthly close, etc.) in a prior high-growth startup environment and has material experience and/or university coursework in accounting. You not only know your debits from your credits, but can research and apply US GAAP to develop accounting treatment. You have produced accounting policy and technical accounting memos and previously owned significant portions of an audit (whether as external auditor or as internal accounting leader). Multi-entity consolidation/intercompany accounting experience is a plus.
You will succeed in this role if you are deeply curious about how Clair's financials come together, from the daily decisions we make to post-mortem analysis of their impacts on our books. You are proactive, with attention to detail, and experienced collaborating across teams. You're comfortable with ambiguity and can prioritize ruthlessly. You're known for process improvement in your current role, tackling inefficient or inadequate processes wherever possible.
What you'll do - Supervise core general ledger activities, ensuring accuracy and compliance
- Execute routine accounts payable (AP), accounts receivable (AR), and other essential accounting tasks
- Maintain and update the chart of accounts to reflect organizational needs
- Own accounting schedules, updating throughout the month
- Cultivate and manage relationships with external auditors, technical accounting advisors, and other strategic partnerships
- Conduct research and provide guidance on critical accounting positions to ensure adherence to U.S. GAAP
- Enhance accounting processes and documentation to streamline operations and improve efficiency
- Collaborate closely with the Finance team on reporting and treasury management initiatives
- Foster relationships with regulators and infrastructure partners to ensure compliance and effective communication
- Lead monthly close and delivery of accurate, timely financials including all supporting schedules, reconciliations, notes, and metrics
- Lead annual audit, coordinating closely with the Head of Finance to facilitate a smooth and successful audit
- Manage the relationship with the external tax firm and oversee the filing of necessary information reports
- Assist in preparing and delivering key deliverables for Board of Directors meetings, providing accurate financial insights and analysis
Required Experience/ Qualifications - 5 years of progressive experience in senior accounting roles, including 2 or more years at a Big4 accounting firm
- Bachelor's Degree in business, accounting, finance or a relevant field required. Active CPA required
- Deep understanding of US GAAP, accounting research, and accounting policy development
- Experience working at an early-stage startup, preferably in consumer fintech
- Audit experience, as external auditor or as internal accounting leader
- Experience with complex revenue reconciliations
- Experience with Quickbooks Online and Netsuite or comparable ERP
- Strong finance & business acumen, desire to understand drivers for business growth
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational and project management skills
Additional Details Location: This is a hybrid position based out of New York City, you will be expected to come into the office three days a week. #LI-Hybrid
Compensation: The annual base salary for this role is $126,000 - $140,000. The actual base pay within this range depends on many factors, such as education, skills and experience. Base pay is only one part of Clair's competitive total compensation package which includes benefits, perks and equity. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
