Bob’s Metals, Inc. provides high quality scrap metal recycling services to industrial, manufacturing and service industries throughout the Pacific Northwest region. Our company utilizes state-of-the-art equipment including material handlers with grapples and magnets, forklifts, mobile shears, balers, and metallurgical analyzers to recycle scrap material effectively. Scrap metal is processed by sorting, cutting, torching, shearing, and baling. Our company has a strong commitment to efficient and environmentally friendly processing of metals to specific size, density and quality that is preferred by steel mills and foundries for melting in the production of new finished products.
The Industrial Buyer is primarily responsible for the identification and acquisition of recycled metal from scrap metal generating companies generally in the manufacturing, industrial and service or trades sectors. These companies may include but are not limited to metal fabricators, manufacturers, metal service centers, metal machine shops, general contractors/sub-contractors, demolition companies and construction companies. The Industrial Buyer will be responsible for providing detailed descriptions of all communication with potential scrap metal suppliers. Communication methodologies will include cold calls over the phone, text messages, e-mails, and in-person or virtual meetings.
The individual in this role will need to become familiar with internal and external computer software programs and interaction with employees and customers/vendors both in person and on the phone. As such, the person in this role must be detail oriented and be able to multi-task daily. This includes the ability to accurately and timely input data on a regular basis.
The person in this position will work directly with yard operational supervisors, scale office personnel, account managers and the ownership group. This is not a remote position. You will be working in our office and/or out in the field full-time where sanitary measures have been implemented to ensure the safety and protection of all employees.
- Contact industrial scrap metal generating companies and provide detailed information and specifics of all interactions.
- Become familiar with the various types of metal commodities that are common in the industry. This will include identification of different types of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys.
- Make cold calls, send e-mails, and set up in person appointments with prospective suppliers.
- Establish relationships with and work in close relation to internal employees such as Dispatcher, Scale Operator, Yard Leads and Logistics Manager.
- Utilize Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tools to track meetings, calls, e-mails, incoming scrap volume, purchases, sales, etc.
- Become proficient with other critical software platforms including point of sale (ROM) and dispatch (CRO).
- Work closely with owners and management to develop plans for short and long-term growth at position.
- Attend meetings with other members of the Purchasing Team where metrics will be shared by the Industrial Purchasing Manager directly related to goals and desired results.
- High level organizational, written and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with limited direction from others.
- Experience identifying ferrous and non-ferrous metals or the ability to learn quickly.
- Have a confident, yet patient approach to dealing with potential suppliers.
- Ability to maintain a superior level of focus on routine transactional tasks.
- Willing and able to handle the physical demands of all assigned jobs which may include walking, bending, lifting up to 50 pounds and sitting or standing for extended periods of time up to 8 hours per day.
- Four Year Bachelor’s Degree in any major is required.
- Previous experience in a manufacturing or industrial business is preferred.
- Previous experience in a purchasing or sales role is preferred.
- Previous experience in a scrap metal recycling facility is a plus.
What does success look like in this position?
- Establish a roadmap for what a typical day/week would look like including how many cold calls, emails sent, and attempted in-person visits.
- Develop an extensive network of decision makers within the manufacturing and industrial marketplace.
- Forge strong cross-departmental relationships with all employees including production and administrative workers.
- Willingness to be coached and mentored by Industrial Purchasing Manager and other more tenured members of the Purchasing Team.
- Show competency at identifying and consistently increasing knowledge of all metals including both ferrous and non-ferrous commodities.
- Become adept at procuring various types of metals from industrial companies that generate ongoing volumes of surplus/scrap metal.
