Position Summary | The Research Assistant position is a grant-funded, part-time (20 hr/week) 1 year termposition, with the possibility of extension, contingent on successful performance. The Research Assistant will work with Invertebrate Zoology staff to sort, photograph and database collection information from roughly ~55K marine invertebrate specimens housed primarily in ethanol in our collections. The expected salary for the Research Assistant is $15.45/hour. This position is overtime eligible. Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience. |
Required Qualifications | Applicant must 1) be meticulous and extremely careful in handling often > 100 year-old specimens/specimen jars, and keep label data associated with their specimens; 2) have at least a High School Diploma or equivalent; 3) know MS Word and Excel exceptionally well, be able to learn other complicated software relatively easily, and be able to take reasonably good digital photographs of specimens and labels; 4) be able to learn the idiosyncrasies of taxonomic nomenclature; and 5) be committed to working 20 hours a week and have good time-management skills so as to be able to complete the project in the budgeted time-frame. |
Preferred Qualifications | Experience in the life sciences, taxonomy, conservation, museum studies; experience using EMu database and knowledge of taxonomic nomenclature; Bachelor's Degree in Science or Fine Arts in a related field |
Physical Demands | Ability to lift relatively large jars or trays of specimens housed in ethanol, wear nitrile gloves while handling specimens, read small, fine sometimes handwritten script or print. |
