Job Description

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is currently designated as an AANAPISI (Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution). The Administrative and Programming Assistant will assist with various components of an AANAPISI grant project which is funded by the Department of Education.
The person in this position will spend 75% of their time assisting with the administrative functions of the grant project and 25% of their time assisting with wellness program implementation. The grant project primarily serves APIDA and Indigenous populations, aiding in student retention. The position is housed within the Cultural and Community Centers which reports to the Office of Inclusion and Diversity. The individual in this role will report to the co-Directors of the project but will engage and interact with various Cultural and Community Centers team members, diverse student populations, and campus partners.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and related experience.
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a highly professional manner with a diverse group of faculty, staff and students.
Detail oriented with strong budgeting, tracking, and documentation skills.
Demonstrated experience working effectively with a diverse population, with sensitivity to cultural and ethnic differences, including students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and prospective students and their families.
Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain a high level of confidentiality and discretion in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Excellent organizational skills.
Detail oriented with demonstrated ability to multitask, tracking and completing varied tasks effectively over an extended period of time.
Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
Experience learning and working in a dynamic environment individually and as a part of a team.
Strong computer skills in electronic file management, word processing, budget tracking, and spreadsheets.

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience working with students and leading and/or planning student-focused activities/events in a higher educational setting.
* Experience in and/or knowledge pertaining to university operations, policies, and procedures in areas such as grants, finance, and human resources.
* Knowledge of mechanisms of student retention, student development theories, and theories and pillars of holistic wellness.
* Experience with various online platforms: Canvas, HokieMart, Banner, etc.
* Experience with programmatic assessment.
* Cultural competency around APIDA and/or Native/Indigenous populations. Understanding contemporary issues facing Indigenous populations as well as their experiences within the higher education setting.
