Departmental Overview
The Advanced BioImaging Center (ABC) under the Department of Molecular Cell Biology at UC Berkeley seeks an Staff Research Associate II, at 100% time. The ABC at UC Berkeley aspires to be a world-leading multidisciplinary imaging center that drives important biological discoveries through critical new advances in all aspects of imaging technology and that drives the dissemination of that technology through a multi-pronged education strategy to scientists around the world. In order to maximize its scientific productivity, the ABC is designed to adopt groundbreaking imaging technologies, to bring technical expertise, and to build worldwide collaborations aimed at tackling challenges posed by terabyte and petabyte scale imaging data processing, visualization and information dissemination. The ABC allows for access to leading-edge imaging and computing hardware, as well as exposure to Bay area experts in a range of diverse disciplines, including in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Mathematics, and more.
The Position:
Under the general supervision of the PI, serve as principal SRA of the Advanced Bioimaging Center (ABC) in Barker Hall. The candidate will work with the ABC's users (students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty) from around the world to enable researchers to make use of advanced imaging technologies in their projects. The candidate will participate in evaluating scientific proposals from potential ABC users for technical feasibility related to sample preparation and support. The work will primarily be conducted at our facility in Barker Hall. Occasional travel may be required. The selected candidate will be appointed at the associate or full rank to commensurate with prior experience and accomplishments. This SRA position maintains the cell cultures and the facility, and oversees all students, SRAs, post-doctoral researchers, and principle investigators who are using the facility.

Responsibilities
Technical/Preparatory/Research:
Using sterile technique in a vertical laminar flow hood, change medium, split cell cultures, both as maintenance and as needed for experiments by researchers. Remove samples sterilely and count viable cells using a hemacytometer or automated cell counter. Freeze and thaw cultures as requested or upon independent observation of health and age of cultures. Maintain records of all work. Create and maintain databases using Quartzy and Google Docs. Set up plates, dishes or flasks of cells and perform cell culture experiments. Independently decide or advise on the best cell plating conditions or advise which cells are best for the type of experiment and then set up experiments. Advise authors of papers and theses regarding "materials and methods" sections. Adapt and/or modify procedures for use in this facility. Research characteristics and special growth requirements of new additions to the cell bank.
Administrative/Curatorial:
Serve as lab manager to the Advanced Bioimaging Center. Organize and manage the use and maintenance of rooms comprising the ABC. Manage and supervise use of ABC equipment. Provide public service in the form of cultures and curatorial-technical advice to researchers and collaborator. Answer email and phone calls from researchers ordering cells and asking advice and organize the weekly cell splitting schedule. Maintain and keep inventory of frozen stocks of cell lines. Update chemical inventory. Inventory, order, and stock supplies.
Teaching/Supervisory:
Instruct undergraduate, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in proper cell culture technique, appropriate growth media and reagents. Assign work to the student employees. Make and enforce work rules for the facility. Supervise the work habits of all who use the facility.
Required Qualifications
Demonstrated experience maintaining mammalian cell cultures (transfections, transductions). Demonstrated experience in basic molecular biology techniques. Computer proficiency. Experience in lab management/maintenance. Willingness to learn new techniques/skills to improve efficiency/integrity of work. Demonstrate experience in working with a variety of laboratory instrumentation, including ability to troubleshoot equipment whenever problems arise and resolve problems quickly so that work can be done in the facility with minimal disruption. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions and perform mathematical calculations pertaining to solution preparation and cell splitting ratios. Must be able to work well without direct supervision after training period. Knowledge of laboratory safety techniques and procedures. Ability to adhere to EH&S Safety Policies and Procedures. Must have excellent record keeping abilities. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, and the ability to analyze and interpret data. Ability to work effectively, both independently and as a team member, with students and staff, including individuals from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds. Ability to function well under pressure and achieve results. Must be willing to work more than 8 hours on Mondays and Fridays, holidays, and occasionally a few hours on Saturday, when necessary, for an average of 40 hours per week. Education/Training: B.A./B.S. in biological sciences, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Basic Chemistry and/or Biology courses plus lab course work. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $56,512.87 - $90,910.14 (Steps 1.0 - 25.0)
This is a full-time, career position. This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Research Support Professionals Unit (RX) between the University of California and the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE).
