Position description
The Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Junior Specialist or Assistant Specialist in the Nayak Lab, to work on CRISPR-Cas9 editing of methanogenic archaea. The Nayak lab studies a group of microorganisms that produce methane gas called methanogens with a particular emphasis on their genetics, physiology and evolution. The methodologies used for these studies include genetic manipulation using CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, whole cell transcriptomic analyses, biochemical methods and phylogenetic analyses.
This position primarily includes research as well as organizational tasks in the lab. The majority (80%) of the effort will be dedicated to research work, with the expectation that this will lead to an authorship in a publication. In addition, the Junior Specialist is responsible for several aspects of the day-to-day operations of the lab, including (but not limited to) receiving and unpacking lab supplies, lab organization, and lab safety management. Research duties will involve performing wet lab techniques PCR, Gibson assembly, electroporation, gel electrophoresis, genomic DNA extraction, Western blotting, RNA extraction as well as bioinformatics analyses to analyze whole genome sequencing data as well as RNA sequencing data.
This position is represented by United Autoworkers Union (5810-RA) and covered by a collective bargaining agreement.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent international degree
Preferred qualifications
Experience with molecular techniques such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, molecular cloning, DNA preparation
Flexible work hours to accommodate experimental time courses
Proficiency in oral and written skills
Experience with anaerobic cultivation techniques is preferred but not required
