Position description
The incumbent is responsible for the management, oversight, administration, and technical support of four MCB Scientific Facilities. The Scientific Facilities operate on a recharge basis and provide services to 70 different research laboratories. The incumbent supervises the staff and oversees the operation of the Facilities, ensures the quality and integrity of work done at the facilities, that a high level of customer service is provided, and aids researchers in the design and implementation of experimental strategies. Incumbent ensures that there is an appropriate training plan for new staff and that customers utilizing the facility follow established protocols and procedures.
Cell Culture Facility
Manages all aspects of the Tissue Culture Facility, including supporting research by providing cells, reagents, and expertise. The Facility independently maintains and splits cell lines for stocks and research experiments, maintains frozen stocks of over 2000 cell lines, initiates cultures as needed, screens for mycoplasma contamination, performs yearly serum testing on up to 4 lots of serum, freezes lines as needed, clones single cell lines, orders supplies needed for specific experiments, and provides assistance to researchers in troubleshooting problems that arise with cells and tissue cultures. Facility customers include principal investigators, undergraduate and graduate students, Staff Research Associates (SRAs), and post-doctoral fellows. The Facility provides cell cultures for researchers to take to their labs for experiments, provides media and materials for checkout, and also furnishes laminar flow hoods, incubators, and cell counters for researchers to use on-site. The Barker Facility currently supports research in labs from MCB, QB3, Chemistry, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, ESPM, Integrative Biology, Plant and Microbial Biology, Public Health, Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI), and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). Incumbent researches characteristics and special growth requirements of new additions to the cell bank, adapts and/or modifies procedures for use in the facility as needed, ensure that laboratory facilities equipment and instruments are maintained, orders materials and supplies on a timely basis, and helps investigators develop optimal experimental strategies, troubleshoot problems with experiments and preparation procedures. The incumbent develops and maintains working cell and chemical inventory systems. The incumbent advises authors of papers and theses regarding "materials and methods" sections. Incumbent provides guidance to investigators for protein expression and stem cell differentiation studies.
Fly Food Facility
Manages operations of the Fly Food Facility, which is operated on a recharge basis and functions to support research by providing Drosophila growth media to hundreds of researchers in 20 laboratories on Campus and to laboratories at LBNL that use fruit flies for their research. The Facility prepares 60 to 120 liters of Drosophila growth media one to three times per week, depending upon researcher's needs; pours media into bottles and vials using Filamatic machine, adds yeast to vials and bottles as needed, plugs them and places racks of vials into plastic bags and delivers to lab fly rooms on proper shelves. The incumbent supervises a career Lab Assistant III (69%) to prepare the fly food.
Media Preparation Facility
The incumbent supervises the career Lab Assistant III staff member (100%) and all activities associated with the Media Preparation Facility, which prepares specific formulas of bacteria, yeast, C.elegans, and Drosophila embryo media, including LB, SC, SD, YPD, YM, NG, and molasses plates to support departmental research. Media is filtered or autoclaved and sterile methods used to add ingredients such as amino acids, vitamins, antibiotics, carbon sources, purines, pyrimidines, organic and inorganic solutions. Combined solutions are aliquotted as liquid media or poured as solid media plates.
Oncall Dishwasher Facility
The incumbent oversees the On-Call Glassware Washing Service, which provides temporary glasswashing support to laboratories when permanent employees are absent.
Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Advanced degree or equivalent international degree
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
At least a minimum of 10 years of research experience.
Preferred qualifications
Advanced degree in Biochemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology, or a closely related field.
Demonstrated advanced knowledge of a combination of multi-disciplinary fields, such as Genetics, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology. Creative thinking, independent judgment.
Knowledge of the University's organizational structure and administrative policies and procedures, such as accounting, personnel, and purchasing. Knowledge of EH&S procedures, processes, regulations, and policies. Knowledge of web authoring software/tools, such as HTML. Demonstrated writing skills (e.g. first author publication).
Extensive recent experience culturing mammalian and insect cells. Extensive experience culturing multiple mammalian and insect cell lines, freezing and thawing lines, mycoplasma testing lines, testing lots of fetal bovine serum, cell counting, stem cell maintenance and differentiation, and cell experimental design and execution.
Demonstrated management and organizational skills. Highly developed problem-solving skills. Ability to analyze complex issues, define issues clearly, think strategically, and produce innovative management strategies based on sound principles and judgment. Demonstrated initiative and organizational skills to meet competing deadlines and manage multiple activities. Ability to analyze fiscal data and present information in a logical format.
Strong supervisory experience, including organizing work assignments, establishing priorities, developing appropriate recommendations and solutions, and ensuring completion of multiple projects to meet all deadlines. The ability to hire, manage, train, and conduct performance evaluations.
Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and oral/written communication skills. Ability to develop and maintain cooperative, effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff, including individuals from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds.
Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint). Adobe Acrobat, and email.
