Departmental Overview
We are seeking a Project Manager to work as part of a multidisciplinary research team funded by the Aligning Science Across Parkinson's (ASAP) initiative. Our collaborative project aims to understand how gene variants associated with Parkinson's disease create variability in cellular function and ultimately influence disease susceptibility. The Project Manager will be responsible for organizing virtual and in person meetings of the team members. The candidate will prepare progress reports, expense and accounting reports and act as a liaison to the ASAP agency. S/he will interact closely with the ASAP team members and coordinate team efforts both within our project and across other ASAP teams worldwide.
The Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at U.C., Berkeley is recognized nationally and internationally for excellence in Molecular and Cell Biology. Responsibilities
Apply professional concepts to monitor timelines, budgets and deliverables related to moderately complex projects, policies and/or processes and functions, specifically:
Monitor timelines, budgets and deliverables for projects; identify issues meeting the agency requirements well in advance;
Manage project budgets, with subcontracts at other institutions;
Provide assistance and oversight with subcontracts/other agreements, including: compiling required documentation, drafting scopes of work, monitoring sub-awards, including payments/invoicing and ensuring adherence to regulations/processes, e.g. animal protocols, and reporting requirements
Using subject matter knowledge to collect and prepare information for use in discussions and meetings
Prepare, edit and modify documents including research progress reports, manuscripts, presentations and proposals, manage project-related communications to the agency, including analyzing, drafting and/or curating content for reports, websites and presentations.
Conduct background research to assist with meetings, reports and to support ongoing work.
Coordinate team members and prepare meeting documents and agendas for ASAP team project meetings, specifically:
Manage relationships with team members, gather data from team members and other sources for research projects;
Coordinate meeting logistics for research projects;
Coordinate periodic research-related events, including oversight of logistics and budgeting, communications, and reimbursements.
Provides additional analytical duties in support of ASAP projects.
Required Qualifications
Experience in the development of collaborative processes and participating in multi-disciplinary scientific teams.
Knowledge of program and/or project management skills and principles such as coordination, planning, scheduling, tracking and computer-based tools to perform the work successfully.
Detail oriented, excellent record keeping, organizational and multitasking skills.
Proven ability to work independently to complete work assignments in a fast-paced environment. This includes the ability to use excellent judgment to establish priorities and resolve problems under short deadlines and with interruptions.
Working knowledge of or ability to learn common campus-specific and other computer application programs, or ability to learn.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to communicate to all levels of an organization, both verbally and in writing.
Effective interpersonal skills and diplomacy necessary for working in a diverse team environment.
Proven experience working as a team member and with internal and external staff, collaborators and funding partners.
Working skills to analyze information and synthesize large amounts of data with strong attention to detail in the preparation of reports and publications.
Strong skills in short-term planning, problem-anticipation and -solving, and customer service; ability to independently investigate solutions to administrative challenges and anticipate leadership needs.
Ability to work effectively with unstructured and changing environments.
Strong competency with MS Office (including solid understanding of Excel) and Google applications.
Experience in administrative and project planning.
Strong analytical/problem-solving skills.
Small to mid-level project management skills.
Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
Experience managing complex projects or performing high-level analyses on program metrics.
Education/Training:
Bachelor's/advanced degree in a science or STEM field and/or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
Extensive experience in an academic or industry research environment.
Master's or PhD degree in molecular biology, genetics, neuroscience and/or equivalent experience/training strongly preferred.
Salary & Benefits
This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position, and eligible for full UC benefits.
This position is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience.
This is a remote-friendly position with 60% remote eligibility.
