Position description
The Isacoff Group in the Molecular and Cell Biology Department at the University of
California, Berkeley welcomes applications for an Associate or Full Project Scientist to provide highly specialized knowledge in Drosophila genetics, with an emphasis on derivation of new strains, including the molecular tools required to engineer new lines and knowledge of current lines available from stock centers around the world.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide expert level knowledge to lab members to facilitate the creation of new strains of transgenic Drosophila and the derivation of new mutations and selectable genetic markers.
  • Analysis of CRISPR induced mutation: using phenotypic analysis and other techniques such as identifying the classification of new alleles.
  • Provide expert level knowledge to lab members to facilitate the determination of why a desired genotype or phenotype is not attainable using the current crossing scheme, followed by the development of an alternative plan.
  • Provide expert level of training in cytogenetics

Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD or equivalent international degree
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
10 years of research experience.
Preferred qualifications
Knowledge of Drosophila genetics, cytogenetics, molecular genetics and husbandry
Ability to read and understand current literature and be able to interpret methods, data, and conclusions to expand knowledge of group members as well as advise them on best application to their research
Demonstrated creativity and highly developed problem solving skills
Advanced academic performance and publication record
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and teamwork
Knowledge of neuro related genes and the ability to predicted phenotypes and extrapolate to genotype. Requires excellent literature skills, and knowledge of FlyBase, Bloomington Stock Center, VDRC, Kyoto, and other Drosophila resources including modENCODE, Textpresso, FlyBook and Interactive Fly
Demonstrated proficiency in cytogenetics
Knowledge in the use of siRNA, CRISPR (insertions, deletions, nulls), molecular cloning techniques and other tools (including knowledge of available vectors, drivers, balancers, and selectable markers)
Knowledge on different types of mutations (insertions, deletions, nulls), how best to make new mutations and analyze them in response to loss of function strength
