The Business Development Manager supports the Chief Communications & Customer Service Officer in the management of business development for all programs and services provided by STA including fixed-route, Rideshare, and Paratransit service. The Business Development Manager’s (BDM) primary objective is to increase ridership through the development of new pass programs with large organizations and increased pass sales sold through STA’s Group Sales channel. The position is responsible for creating and implementing performance strategies that increase fare revenue and ridership in all STA service categories. The BDM will collaborate with the Senior Communications & Marketing Manager and the Web Services Manager to identify outreach and communication strategies to attract new business and increase overall pass sales and ridership. Field-based sales activity is an important strategy to identify new business opportunities. Work requires knowledge of business development, customer relationship management, data analysis, and interdepartmental collaboration to affect STA’s top key performance indicators: ridership and pass sales. The BDM provides supervision to the Customer Support & Outreach Coordinator.
Examples of Duties
Contract Program Sales
At the direction of the Chief Communications & Customer Service Officer, this position oversees the sales component of the Employer Sponsored Bus Pass (ESBP) Program, Group Sales, the Universal Transit Access Pass (UTAP) Program, Community Access Pass (CAP), and pass sales at all contracted retail outlet locations. The BDM will create and implement growth strategies to increase participation in these programs and will recommend the development of new or amended programs to increase pass sales and ridership. The BDM will work closely with the Customer Service Manager who is responsible for ongoing customer care and order fulfillment.
Customer Relationship Management
The BDM will overhaul STA’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) process to improve the customer experience and to more quickly identify and understand changes in pass sales and ridership data. Consolidated information gathered through an updated CRM service will be used for data analysis and reporting, as well as to inform pass sales opportunities.
Data Analysis, Reporting, and Administration
The position will regularly review various data sets and develop reports for the Chief Communications & Customer Service Officer. Identifying and understanding shifts and trends in ridership, pass sales, contract billing and Customer Relationship Management activity is an essential function of this position.
Field Work and Sales Activity
The BDM will balance office time with extensive field work. To identify new business opportunities, this position requires participation in business-related and community outreach events throughout the region, as well as regularly contacting new businesses and other organizations to share information about STA’s programs and services. Retail outlet sales expansion will be a key strategy as the agency shifts to an account-based fare payment structure. The BDM will play a key role in assisting large organizations and group sales clients through the fare payment transition.
Education and Experience
Training & Experience
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a business or communications discipline. Experience in business development, sales, communications, and data analysis is preferred.
Physical Requirements
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to work in an office setting; stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; operate office equipment including extensive use of a computer keyboard; push, pull, lift, and/or carry light amounts of weight. Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to perform repetitive motions of wrist, hands and/or fingers.
Computer Skills
Experience within the Microsoft environment. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software. Ability to learn new software programs with minimal formal training.
