Hiring Development Director

Partners with Families & Children (Partners) prevents, interrupts and repairs cycles of abuse and neglect within families. We are a nonprofit that has been around for 35 years providing exemplary programs for families and an encouraging and fulfilling work environment for staff. Summary: This position has primary responsibility for securing sufficient funds to realize the Board’s goals and objectives, both capital and programmatic. The Development Director is responsible for building and executing the development plan, which may include major gifts, corporate donations, grant solicitations, planned giving, special events and in-kind resources. The Development Director is also responsible for all external communications, including outreach, education, social media, public relations, marketing, and event management. A large portion of this job is grant-writing and grant management/reporting. This position is the only position in Development; there are no other staff in Development reporting to the Development Director.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each of the essential duties/responsibilities listed below. 1. Plan fund development activities

  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors, Development Committee, and Chief Executive Officer to create a fund development plan which increases revenues to support the strategic direction of the organization
  • Implement the fund development plan in accordance with ethical fundraising principles
  • Monitor, evaluate and report on all fundraising activities to ensure that the fundraising goals are being achieved.
  • Monitor trends in the community or region and adapt fundraising strategies as necessary.

2. Organize and execute fund development activities

  • Develop and manage timelines for various fundraising activities to ensure strategic plans and critical fund-raising processes are carried out in a timely manner.
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures for the development department which reflect ethical fundraising practices.
  • Prepare and submit grant applications and grant reports as outlined in the fund development plan to generate funds for the organization.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major donors and remain accountable for planning and executing a major gifts program focusing on gifts of $1,000 and above.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of special fundraising events as specified in the fund development plan to generate funds for the organization.
  • Prepare regular reports on grant contracts, progress, budgets, receipts and expenditure related to fundraising and the management of the fund development activities.
  • Take the lead to coordinate with the Fund Development Committee to ensure they are kept informed and engaged, and that annual goals are being met
  • Identify and develop corporate, community and individual prospects for the organization's fundraising priorities.
  • Responsible for the administration of a donor mailing list and donor database which respects the privacy and confidentiality of donor information. Responsible to input development activities and results into software, reconcile with Finance Director, and provide monthly development reports to CEO.
  • Coordinate in-kind donations and issuing of receipts

3. Coordinate staff and volunteer development activities

  • Foster an understanding of philanthropy within the organization.
  • Engage volunteers for agency support and external activities using volunteer management practices.
  • Engage the board, staff and volunteers in fundraising activities.

4. Direct all external communications

  • Develop a comprehensive annual communication plan to promote the organization and maximize public awareness of mission of the organization.
  • Develop communications content and print materials including program curricula, social media communication, press releases, advertising media, and organizational publications for education, awareness, marketing and fund development.
  • Develop and sustain relationships with community stakeholders to advance the mission goals of the organization.

5. Oversee event management

  • Plan and execute event according to requirements, target audience and objectives
  • Prepare event budget and ensure adherence
  • Source and negotiate with vendors, suppliers and contract services
  • Coordinate all event operations, pre-event promotional activities and post-event media
  • Analyze the event’s success and prepare post events reports

6. Oversee outreach, community education and awareness activities

  • Schedule and oversee community events and outreach focused on raising awareness of child abuse and available services of our organization.
  • Represent Partners for public speaking/presentations within the community focused on raising awareness of Partners’ services.
  • Develop and ensure distribution of materials focused on raising awareness of Partners’ services.

7. Perform all other duties as necessary or assigned.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must meet the minimum qualifications listed below. These qualifications are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required to perform this job.

Education/Experience: To perform this job successfully, an individual must have:

  • Bachelor's and five (5) years of progressively responsible relevant experience which includes: three years of full-time fundraising experience demonstrating success of face-to-face solicitation of gifts of $10,000 or more, mass market fundraising, proposal and grant writing, donor stewardship and strong skills working with volunteers;
  • Or comparable experience totaling five(5) years of progressively responsible full-time sales, marketing, public relations or experience which has involved direct face-to-face contact with clients; customers, prospective customers and members of the public. A Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience;
  • Demonstrated excellent proposal and grant writing, presentation and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Ability to organize and manage large, multiple volunteer efforts successfully;
  • Demonstrated proficiency for detailed, accurate financial tracking and project budget administration;
  • Demonstrated high-level independent decision making and critical thinking skills;
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Ability to multi-task and be organized to meet deadlines;
  • Possesses excellent “people skills”;
  • Acceptable references from former employer(s);
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office suite and donor management software

Certificates/Licenses: To perform this job successfully, there is no certificate or licensing requirements although CFRE professional certification is desirable.
