Job Summary
This is an Internal Employment Opportunity

The Corvallis Farm Unit is seeking a Farm Operations Manager. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

The Horticulture Research Farms Manager manages overall farm operations, the farm facilities, and grounds for the Corvallis Farm Unit at the 113-acre Lewis-Brown farm, which serves OSU Horticulture scientists. USDA-ARS HCRL, NCGR scientists, and researchers from at least three other OSU departments also use the farms. This position coordinates overall farm operations, making facilities and grounds decisions in consultation with the Corvallis Farm Unit head and meeting reporting requirements for the department, college, university, and state and federal government. Other reporting requirements include pesticide use, safety, and Organic certification compliance. The farm manager is responsible for oversight of the assistant Lewis Brown farm manager (Bio-Science Research Tech) and temporary farm labor. The farm manager also coordinates the day-to-day operations of the Lewis-Brown Farm by providing necessary labor, labor supervision, training, equipment maintenance, and expertise to ensure the success of the research efforts of research programs. This position has primary oversight for pesticide applications on the Lewis-Brown Farm. This position ensures the health and safety of all those using the farms: faculty, staff, and students.
This position is critical for the operation of Lewis Brown Farm. The various horticultural practices used on the farms can vastly differ from the standard way of growing these crops on other OSU farms or among commercial growers. The incumbent must not only understand how plants grow but be sensitive to the unique needs of the various researchers who depend on this type of facility.
Farm personnel provide the necessary expertise and labor to prepare the fields for use in an array of specialized research projects and assist in maintaining plots as requested during the growing season. The Farm Manager position is a hands-on position. The Farm Manager must be able to perform all of the necessary work to keep the Lewis Brown research farm operating. The Farm Manager also works with and supervises classified employees, temporary workers, and students to make management decisions and coordinates the day-to-day operations by providing necessary labor, equipment, and expertise to ensure the success of the research efforts.

Key Responsibilities
50% Management/Work Execution
Responsible for the daily operations and maintenance of the farm activities include, but are not limited to: soil testing, land preparation, lime application, planting, pesticide application, rodent control, irrigation, and harvest of crops to provide precise and uniform field research conditions. Utilize proper cover crop management techniques for good soil health, uniformity, and weed control on farm grounds. Work with research project leaders to design the best management practices, based on experience working on individual farm fields and soils, to achieve desired research project goals. Provide detailed consultation and/or specific project oversight when individuals are infrequent farm users. Keep accurate records of all field operations, including implements used and materials (cover crops, pesticides, soil amendments) applied. Coordinate, supervise, and participate in the transportation of equipment from the Lewis Brown farm to the satellite farms and other off-station research sites, as requested. With the farm staff, outline needed maintenance and improvement goals and make recommendations to the faculty and farm supervisor regarding these goals. Coordinate, supervise, and participate in the construction and maintenance of research buildings, facilities, farm machinery, specialized plot equipment, and landscape and road maintenance of facility grounds as outlined in goals.
15% Supervision
Supervises farm employees, students and temporary workers who provide labor needs at the farm, which includes planning, assigning and approving work, disciplining and rewarding, responding to grievances, hiring and firing and preparing and signing performance evaluations. Also provides oversight as needed for students hired by research projects.
15% Pesticide and Fertilizer Application
Operate specialized research equipment to apply non-restricted, restricted, and experimental agricultural chemicals, including pesticides, fertilizers, and plant growth regulators. Purchase agricultural chemicals and fertilizers, commonly used as maintenance applications on the research farms. Utilize contemporary pest management decision tools such as computer-based pest models, scouting, etc. Maintain necessary pesticide applicator licenses to serve in these roles. Maintain contact information for health and safety emergencies.

10% Planning and safety
Through consultation with the more than ten research project leaders who typically use the farms, develop the College of Agricultural Science’s (CAS) policies on land, equipment, and facilities used on the farms and farm safety. Policies include topics such as soil testing and soil amendment management, pest control on the farm, pesticide handling and application safety, and safe operation of farm equipment. Ensure that all farm users are aware of these policies. Develop and deliver needed educational programs for individuals or groups to assure policy observance. Maintain current knowledge of state and federal regulations regarding equipment transportation on public roads and assure farm staff and users of compliance with these policies. Maintain all necessary records and ensure that all research projects apply pesticides following guidelines established by the CAS, Oregon Department of Agriculture, and Environmental Protection Agency. Ensure that the farm complies with all required pesticide safety standards.
5% Operate computers to enter data (field history, field operations, pesticide and soil amendment applications, etc) in the farm management information system. Organize farm meetings as needed.
5% Work with the Corvallis Farm Unit supervisor and fiscal manager to develop the farm budget and monitor the budget through the fiscal year. Work with the fiscal manager to annually review and update farm charges to be listed in the fee book. Order parts and supplies for needed work. Anticipate major equipment, building, and grounds maintenance needs so that these items can be considered in farm budget development. Maintain project billing records and assure project compliance with billing policies. Work with the departmental accounting staff to monitor project billing and provide needed oversight to ensure that bills make sense.
What You Will Need
B.S. in horticulture, agronomy, arboriculture, or related field-based agricultural science or 5 years’ experience working on a public or private research farm.
Experience in supervision/workload coordination on farm and farm operations experience.
Must have or obtain a public pesticide applicators license, with endorsements to apply rodenticides, insecticides, fungicides, and restricted use herbicides within three months of hire date.
A working knowledge of irrigation systems and practices.
Demonstrated experience in equipment operation and maintenance, fabrication of agricultural equipment, and maintenance and operation of irrigation systems, plumbing, etc.
Proficiency in shop equipment, including plumbing, welding, electrical, woodworking, and small constructions.
Demonstrated administrative skills in tracking expenses, inventory, ordering supplies, and planning projects.
Patience, attention to detail, and self-motivation.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to manage and meet deadlines.
General knowledge of computers and skills in the use of word processing, presentation, and data management software.
Demonstrated ability to function as part of a team and to plan, organize, evaluate, manage, and delegate details associated with individual team programs.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
What We Would Like You to Have
M.S. in crop & soil science, agronomy, horticulture, or a related field-based agricultural science.

The successful candidate is preferred to have experience with large to medium-scale field equipment and be able to work with various pieces and sizes of equipment.
Experience in operating in organic-certified fields, including reporting and compliance requirements.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
May require working early morning, evening, and/or weekend hours in all weather and working conditions as dictated by circumstances to ensure that farm objectives are met. Examples may include a) insecticide applications which need to be made at night, b) weekend work in times of heavy workload or if weather conditions do not permit needed tasks to be done during the week, c) equipment break-down or issues arising in the field which are preventing researchers from doing necessary tasks such as planting or harvest.
Working outside in inclement weather, dust, and dirt is common. The ability to lift and carry heavy loads (50 lb) is required
