Job Details
Position Summary
The Controller has direct responsibility for the financial accounting across the multiple lines of business including property and asset management, real estate development and non-profit accounting. The Controller collaborates with the CFO in enhancing and developing systems to address current and future needs of the organization, monitoring business plan results, and implementing systems for effective and responsible financial management, business line analysis and projections. The responsibilities will be carried out in a manner that meets financial goals and mitigates financial risk to the organization.
Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities
Ensure all company financials are issued on time and according to GAAP on an interim and annual basis.
Manage the property fiscal workflow.
Prepare management, committee, board and external interim financial reports to lenders, housing development investors, governmental agencies, and philanthropic partners.
Oversee organizational budgeting, cash management, audit, and accounting activities.
Coordinate with the CFO, CEO, and Directors to plan the budget process and prepare annual budget.
Provide support to other departments in developing and implementing the annual budget.
Administer the Board approved budget and monitor variances from budget assumptions.
Direct, and delegate to Accounting Manager(s) to prepare and issue the annual financial audit, ensuring that all deadlines are met.
Responsible for accounting workflow for selected properties when needed.
Responsible for some Housing Development Accounting or Financials tasks.
Administer, monitor, and recommend improvements to internal financial policies and procedures to maintain adequate controls and services and to execute or report on any transactions or information request. This includes training staff on Accounting Policies and procedures.
Manage all aspects of the monthly financial accounting close process including reconciliations, reporting and recommendations for reforecasting.
Collaborate with CFO to prepare monthly financial package for presentation to Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
Prepare departmental financial statements to department heads.
Report cash position and cash reserves to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors monthly.
Attend Finance, Housing Development, and Asset Management/Property Management Committee meetings.
Supervise two Accounting Managers who manage a/p, payroll, benefits accounting, Cash Receipts, Housing Development Accounting functions, corporate audit and provide guidance. Also oversee Property Accounting Staff.
Recruit, train and develop professional accounting staff.
Work closely with Regional Portfolio Managers and Assistant Portfolio Managers on issues related to property financial statements property transactions.
Attend departmental meetings such as Property Management, Asset Management, etc.

Superior financial management, budgeting, and reporting skills.
Strong leadership, analytical, and organizational skills.
Knowledge of nonprofit organizations and A-133 compliance.
Use of a collaborative and facilitative approach and the flexibility to work with a broad range of cultures, personalities, and work styles in a small office environment.
Belief that no job/task is too small or too large to accomplish the goals of the organization .
Strongly self-motivated and able to follow through in completing high-quality, detailed work with minimal supervision .
Ability to consolidate and eliminate related party transactions as a function of the financial audit.
Capacity to prioritize and simultaneously manage multiple tasks to meet internal and external deadlines.
Demonstrated ability to prepare clear, accurate, well-organized financial reports and to communicate verbally in an effective and concise manner.
Proficient in Microsoft Office, accounting software programs, property management software programs and willingness to expand skill base.
Yardi super user proficiency.
Scope And Accountability
Work under established guidelines and controls, including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Sarbanes-Oxley and other local and national government regulations, including transportation, environmental, Financial Accounting Standards Board
Perform duties independently, but guidance and direction are available for unusual or critical situations.
Contribute to the strategic goals of the organization by seeking out ways to implement and manage change within the fiscal department while collaborating with other departments to promote the same.
Position involves a moderate degree of complexity in dealing with recurring work situations.
Supervisory Responsibility:
Position includes supervision of exempt and non-exempt staff.
Education And/or Experience
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required.
CPA designation preferred.
5 years Controller level with Affordable Housing experience required.
