Cramer Fish Sciences is Hiring a Controller Near Portland, OR

Cramer Fish Sciences (CFS) has an immediate opening for a highly experienced Controller who will be responsible for all accounting functions within the organization including, but not limited to, accounts payable (A/P), accounts receivable (A/R), financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow analysis and the management of accounting and payroll staff. The Controller works closely with the Vice President of Operations and supports the company's vision and employee shareholder goals by maintaining efficient and compliant policies and procedures, while mitigating company risk.

ABOUT CRAMER FISH SCIENCES: We are a fisheries research consulting firm serving throughout the Pacific States and Idaho. Our team achieves this through effective and unbiased data collection, insightful analysis and interpretation, and clear communications and publication of results in scientific journals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities by Function:
Oversight and Direction of Financial & Accounting Activities:
  • Participates in the annual ESOP valuation process with external valuation company.
  • Leads all accounting processes and staff. Ensures GAAP compliance, timely delivery, and accurate results are delivered.
  • Manages day-to-day relationship with banking and other financial partners.
  • Works with outside tax, accounting, and banking resources as needed to complete annual review and audits.
  • Responsible for cash management and ensures appropriate cash reserves.
  • Leads and designs the annual budgeting process with all staff, providing resources, schedules, standards, and Constructs the final budget and presents it to management.
  • Creates and updates key performance indicators (KPI), bi-weekly and monthly financial reports, income statements, balance sheets, in a timely manner, for executives, the Board of Directors and employee-owners. Coordinates with the VP of Operations to present financials to staff.
  • Makes financial presentations to other various internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identifies cost savings in contracted work and production, vendor/sub-consultant relationships, office operations, and employee management.
  • Provides guidance on financial/business planning, including company expansion, loan, and lease payment schedules, optimizing billing rates and business unit work funnels.
  • Documents financial and operational policies and procedures, making periodic updates, as required by changes in the company's business activities.
  • Reviews and recommends changes to critical software or vendor partnerships to improve accounting processes and integrity.
Oversight and Direction of Financial & Accounting Activities (Weekly/Monthly):
  • Oversees semi-monthly payroll process. Ensures accurate pay, deductions, and compliance.
  • Manages all accounts receivable, accounts payable, and other general accounting activities and staff.
  • Ensures invoicing to clients is timely, accurate and properly reflected in the financial accounting software and reporting.
  • Monitors cash flow needs to ensure timely payment of payables and
  • Reviews accounting adjustments, invoices and bank deposits for accuracy and compliance with existing policies and procedures.
  • Maintains proper segregation of duties.
Manage and Direct the Finance and Accounting Team:
  • Hires, supervises, leads, and promotes the development of a team of 5 working both in-office and remote.
  • Regularly evaluates staff. Provides performance feedback and training, as appropriate.
  • Leads appropriate department and team meetings.
  • Supports coordination and balance of work within the department.
  • Effectively communicates and supports effective communication within the department and across the organization.
Policy & Compliance:
  • Works directly with CPA advisors to maintain tax, accounting, and ESOP compliance to governing regulations and requirements.
  • Identifies and ensures completeness of all government filing requirements to ensure the company remains in compliance and in good standing. This includes, but is not limited to, for all jurisdictions business licenses, payroll tax returns and withholdings, 1099 forms, GSA and SAM.gov registrations.
  • Makes F&A policy change recommendations and applies changes as approved.
  • Provides oversight and control of all company expense authorizations to ensure compliance with company policies.

  • Oversees fixed asset management and ensures capital expenditure policies are consistently followed.

Education/Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
  • Eight plus years of appropriate accounting and/or finance work experience.
Desired Experience:
  • MBA, Business Related MS, CPA and/or CMA, a plus
  • Government contracting and audit experience.
  • Multi-state operations experience.
  • Small business experience.
  • ESOP administration experience.
  • Experience in a consulting or service organization where billable hours are the primary revenue source.
COMPENSATION: $120,000 - $160,000 depending upon experience. 401 (k) has a 3% match and full vesting after one year. The annual cash bonus has a 3% target. Benefit package includes medical, dental, vision, basic life, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, employee assistance programs, PTO, paid company holidays, and other various voluntary benefits.
ESOP: CFS is a 100% employee-owned company. Our employee stock option plan (ESOP) is a qualified defined contribution plan. Our target ESOP contribution is 5%. Eligibility is after one year of service with an entry date of Jan 1 or July 1.
