Overview of the Controller role:

  • Safeguard Financial Integrity: Oversee accounting systems to guarantee precise and reliable data, while optimizing efficiency.
  • Embrace Innovation: Stay updated on the newest financial management technologies and lead the implementation of relevant tools to streamline processes, strengthen reporting, and uphold data accuracy.
  • Financial Operations Management: Manage daily financial tasks like accounts payable, payroll, and general ledger activities.
  • General Ledger Guru: Handle all aspects of the general ledger, including monthly journal entries, closing procedures, generating financial statements, bank reconciliations, and account reconciliations.
  • Grant Management: Collaborate with the development department to ensure accurate grant report reconciliations and timely payment processing.
  • Financial Reporting Champion: Oversee the preparation and presentation of accurate and timely financial reports for internal stakeholders, board members, and external partners. Demonstrate a strong grasp of GAAP for non-profits with intricate Net Asset restrictions and Endowments.
  • Pro-Forma Performer: Work with the team to solidify the financial viability of event operations through the Pro-Forma process.
  • Budgeting Boss: Lead the annual budget creation and deliver quarterly forecast updates.
  • Audit Ace: Manage and spearhead annual financial audits, collaborating with external auditors to provide necessary documentation and ensure compliance. Implement audit recommendations and best practices to elevate internal controls and financial reporting processes.
  • Compliance Crusader: Guarantee adherence to all relevant regulations and reporting requirements for non-profit organizations. Stay informed about changes in accounting standards and advise on their potential consequences.
  • Efficiency Advocate: Identify areas for improvement within finance and accounting functions. Implement best practices to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and transparency in financial operations.
  • Tax Form Teamwork: Coordinate the annual filing of IRS information returns (Form 990) and other relevant annual returns, working collaboratively with tax professionals.

Preferred Qualifications for the Controller:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • 5 years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated experience of nonprofit accounting and financial reporting.
  • Experience with Financial Edge software is a plus.
