San Francisco, CA

The Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) is seeking a full-time Human Resources Assistant based in San Francisco, California. This is a non-exempt position that reports to the Director of Human Resources & Administration. The ILRC currently has a hybrid work model that requires two in-office days per week.

The ILRC is a national nonprofit legal support center headquartered in San Francisco with staff in Washington, D.C., Austin, Houston, Laredo, and San Antonio, TX, Southern California, and the San Joaquin Valley of California. The mission of the ILRC is to work with, educate, and enhance the capacity of immigrants, community organizations, and the legal sector, in order to build a democratic society that values diversity, dignity, and the rights of all people. Founded in 1979, the ILRC is regarded as one of the foremost experts on engaging immigrants and developing their leadership in the democratic process, providing expertise on complex issues of immigration law, procedure and policy, and engaging in advocacy and educational initiatives on policies that affect immigrants. We are a team-based organization that makes most of its decisions in a collaborative fashion that allows for significant staff input.

The Human Resources Assistant will be the third member of the Human Resources team. The individual who fills this role will play an integral part in increasing HR’s capacity to serve the organization, draft policies, and work on DEIAB initiatives, as well as handling other responsibilities as assigned. We are looking for a self-starter who thrives in a collaborative environment and can also work independently. The selected candidate will work with the existing Human Resources team to help establish priorities and to implement HR strategy in ways that elevate and advance the ILRC’s mission and organizational goals.

Job Responsibilities: The Human Resources Assistant will help with the following, including, but not limited to:

  • Recruitment assistance:
  • Schedule internal planning meetings;
  • Submit and manage online job postings;
  • Schedule virtual and in-person interviews;
  • Make travel arrangements; and
  • Prepare on/offboarding paperwork.
  • Answer helpdesk tickets, triage, and escalate as necessary;
  • Employee Records:
  • Maintain digital and physical employee files, records, and documentation on both and offsite; and
  • Perform period audits to ensure compliance. 
  • Provide administrative support;
  • Help plan and execute employee recognition events;
  • Help to maintain our HRIS system; and
  • Help with various other HR related activities as necessary.

Qualifications: Requirements for the position include:

  • A commitment to learning about and defending the rights of noncitizens in the United States;
  • Zero to five years of experience in human resources. 
  • A willingness and desire to learn the various aspects of HR including but not limited to: 
  • Employee relations
  • Recruiting
  • Administration
  • Benefits
  • Compensation
  • Compliance; and 
  • Staff development.
  • Possess knowledge equivalent to 4-year degree from a college or university. Additionally, a qualified applicant must:
  • Demonstrate unquestionable ethics, respect, and integrity.

  • Have strong communication skills, speaking, and writing persuasively and listening attentively.
  • Be solution oriented and rooted in the context of the culture and intent of the organization.
  • Have the ability to manage detail through simple systems and processes focused on accessibility and collaboration.
  • Exhibit objectivity and an openness to others’ views; provide and welcome feedback; support everyone’s efforts to succeed; and inspire respect and trust.
  • Have the demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage time effectively – focusing naturally on the right things and move naturally between projects and tasks without losing sight of critical elements and priorities;
  • Be naturally curious with a self-starter personality –always looking for ways to innovate and improve, without waiting to be told what to do;and
  • Build and leverage strong working relationships, both internally and externally.

It is a plus if the applicant has additional experience including:

  • Familiarity with nonprofit environments preferred;
  • Event planning experience;
  • Second language proficiency, within the range of conversational to fluent; and 
  • Experience with BambooHR or other HR Information Systems.

Salary/Benefits: 

Pay is very competitive for the field and commensurate with experience The salary range for this position is from $65,000 to $80,000 The ILRC offers excellent benefits, medical/dental/vision insurance, EAP sessions, a flexible spending account for medical and dependent care, vacation, and sick leave. The ILRC also sponsors a retirement plan option upon fulfillment of eligibility. Additionally, we offer an annual professional development stipend of $2,500 and from 2024 – 2027, an annual wellness stipend of $2,500.
