Job Overview
Georgetown's Division of Student Affairs supports the University's academic mission by educating students as whole persons, promoting their intellectual, moral, spiritual, and social formation; enhancing students' learning and helping to prepare them for lives of discernment, civic engagement, and professional growth; teaching personal responsibility and respect for people of all faiths, cultures, and beliefs; and promoting the health and safety of students and others in the University community.
The mission of the Georgetown Disability Cultural Initiative is to support, educate and empower disabled community members of all cultures, races, sexual orientations, genders and ages, celebrating disabled people's achievements and advocating for a climate that promotes social justice, free of all barriers and discrimination. The goal of the Disability Cultural Initiative is the establishment of a fully-fledged Disability Cultural Center that will coordinate and integrate the educational, academic, social, and support programming for disabled students, faculty, staff, allies, and people interested in learning more about disability.
The Associate Director of the Disability Cultural Initiative provides leadership and program direction on all aspects of the DCI's mission. They lead the campus's efforts to ensure the well-being of its disabled community members, by making sure University policies, procedures, programs, services, and community members are informed by contemporary understanding of intersectional disabled experience and current best practices in outreach and programming.
The Associate Director envisions, organizes, and implements programs, supports outreach campaigns, and collaborates with key stakeholders to advance disability culture and to advocate for people with apparent and non-apparent disabilities. They oversee the work of this initiative and will have access to resources to carry out the programming efforts; and promote an inclusive environment that facilitates the advancement, growth, and development of students, staff, and faculty with disabilities through advocacy, policy development, and institutional intervention to support diversity on campus.
Work Interactions
The Associate Director reports to the VP for Student Affairs & Dean of Students, and interacts with many other faculty, administrators, staff, alumni, and students in implementing the role's responsibilities, which include but are not limited to:
Guiding long-term development of the Initiative and ensuring its yearly operations are in line with the Initiative and university missions to provide educational resources about disability culture to the campus community and to increase awareness of the diverse experiences, needs, issues and assets of persons living with disabilities
Strategic planning and fundraising
Developing, implementing, and administering programs and services in collaboration with the Disability Studies Program, The Women's Center, The LGBTQ Resource Center, The Center for Minority Equity and Access, the Racial Justice Initiative, the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Affirmative Action, the Academic Resource Center, the Cawley Career Center and other campus partners
Engaging students, staff and faculty with off campus disability organizations through networking, collaboration on programs and participation in events
Ensuring accessibility of all programming and communications
Assessing programs and services
Managing resources and facilities
Recruiting, hiring, training, educating, and supervising, evaluating student staff
Qualifications
Master's degree in Disability Studies, Education, or related academic discipline preferred
At least 3 years of experience with educational and cultural program development and coordination
Demonstrated knowledge of the lived disability experience, disability studies, disability culture, disability history and rights, and Universal Design
Expertise in promoting advocacy and disability justice with students, faculty, staff and in programs and curricula
Ability to engage disability culture through interdisciplinary inquiry, and to build strong relationships within the context of disability culture
Ability to be an effective leader/supervisor of diverse staff.
Strong project management skills. Strategic planning and staff management experience preferred.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
