Council of State Governments is Hiring a Development Manager Near Chicago, IL

The Council of State Governments is the nation's only nonpartisan association of state officials serving all three branches of government in all 50 states and the U.S. territories. CSG Midwest focuses on meeting the needs of state policymakers and leaders in the 11 Midwestern states Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin. In addition, four Canadian provinces: Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan are members or affiliate members of CSG Midwest's Midwestern Legislative Conference. This position is based in our Lombard, IL office and preference will be given to candidates that are local but may consider remote candidates.

JOB SUMMARY

The Development Manager is responsible for providing lead staff support for fundraising efforts in support of organization projects and objectives. The Development Manager conducts fundraising campaigns and maintains external donor relations and works with policy staff in cultivating and pursuing development opportunities. The Development Manager also contributes to various group projects and team activities as directed and represents the Midwestern region and Midwestern CSG constituents in external forums as appropriate.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides lead staff support for Midwest Office fundraising and development efforts. Specific duties include outreach to potential donors, implementation of fundraising campaigns, identification and execution of grant writing opportunities, and maintaining donor relations.
  • Provides excellent customer service both internally and externally to achieve goals with donors, partners, and stakeholders to successfully grow financial support for CSG Midwest programs and services.
  • Work in close consultation with Regional Director, Director of Operations, and Director of Research and Policy, as well as program managers to support the success of CSG Midwest program, services, and activities.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively with internal and external audiences to advance the mission of the CSG Midwest region.
  • Represents CSG Midwest in external forums (e.g., Midwestern state legislatures, other association meetings, stakeholder events, etc.) as appropriate.
  • Serves as principal staff liaison to at least one Midwestern state.
  • Serves as member of other in-house teams as assigned.
  • Participates in/contributes to various CSG-wide activities.
  • Serves as ambassador of the CSG mission to champion excellence in state governments to advance the common good.
  • Other substantive and administrative tasks as assigned.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of fundraising strategies and principles and experience in fundraising and external donor relations, including demonstrated success in meeting funding needs for programs or other efforts.
  • Successful and demonstrated record of fundraising/development campaigns and grant-writing experience.
  • Reliable self-starter, with strong project management skills, including ability to manage multiple projects/tasks simultaneously.
  • Positive team player with a professional work ethic.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, administrative, communication (both oral and written), and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team and cross-departmentally and organizationally.
  • Experience working with public officials and working knowledge of public policy and the role of states within the federal system, preferred but not required.
  • Steadfast commitment to providing members and stakeholders with timely, effective customer service.
  • Dedication to public service with an unfailing commitment to act with civility, be non-partisan in performing CSG duties, and be a responsible steward of public funds.
  • Willingness and ability to: demonstrate cultural competence, including self-awareness, understanding and valuing others; interact effectively with diverse people in different contexts; foster equity and inclusion.
  • Flexibility and willingness to take on new tasks as necessary to meet evolving needs and objectives of the organization and its members.
  • Strong office technology skills, including experience with MS Office. Experience with donor and prospect management technologies and tools a plus.
  • Willingness to travel as needed, including several trips of varying length per year.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree, with a minimum of three years' experience in development/fundraising/external relations, association management, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Grant writing, general writing, and state government experience preferred.
  • Experience working with public officials desired, but not required.
  • Experience working cross-departmentally with events, programs, accounting, etc.

COMPENSATION

CSG believes that pay equity and pay transparency advance workplace fairness. Compensation will be equitable and based on experience. The salary range for this position, based in Chicago, IL is $73,000 to $78,000. This position has opportunity for career advancement based on meeting development targets. This salary range is subject to change based on work location and market conditions.
