Board Of Child Care B W is Hiring a Director of Finance Near Baltimore, MD

What is this job?
As a member of the Senior Leadership Team at the Board of Child Care, the Director of Finance & Accounting plays a pivotal role in overseeing all aspects of the Board of Child Care’s finance operations. With oversight of a $50 million budget, this position requires a strong leader who can manage and supervise a talented team and ensure the accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting. The Director of Finance will be responsible for developing and implementing effective accounting policies and procedures, while maintaining a strong internal control environment.
The Director reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer (check out boardofchildcare.org for the executive team's bio's). They will use data to empower other executive leaders and the board of directors in their decision-making process.

We would agree with you that our name is not the greatest and actually have a new name being rolled out in May of 2024! The Board of Child Care is not a federal or state agency. It is an independent not-for-profit, 501(c)3 organization that is focused on serving children and their families. It has evolved and adapted from orphanages opened 140 years ago to being a leader in providing high-quality behavioral health, educational, and residential services across United States. BCC as a whole has approximately 700 employees, an annual budget of about $55 million, and the majority of its employees are in MD, WV, PA, and DC.
Do I need any prior experience?
Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field.
  • CPA certification is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of accounting experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven experience using Sage Intacct accounting software is highly desirable.
  • Experience healthcare billing with Medicaid, Private Insurance and Managed Care providers is highly desirable.
  • Accounting oversight and reporting experience, including Federal and State grant management and other compliance related to Federal and State grants.
  • Possesses in-depth knowledge of nonprofit accounting practices.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent project management skills. BCC uses Asana.com as its project management software.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, with advanced skills in Excel modeling.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

What does the Director of Finance do specifically?

  • Model and act in accordance with BCC’s core values: safety, empathy, relationships, and impact.

  • Oversees day-to-day operations across accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, monthly closing, financial reporting, reconciliations, and payments.
  • Prepares monthly financial statement analysis according to GAAP; analyzes differences between actuals and budget and presents findings and recommendations to the Executive team.
  • Leads the development of the annual operating budget, including driving the process, and coordinating with stakeholders throughout the organization.
  • Leads interaction with external auditors throughout the audit process.
  • Responsible for 990 filings, 403(b) plan audits, and single audit (A-133).
  • Develops and implements internal controls to safeguard financial assets.
  • Drives budget submission and grant reporting to government agencies.
  • Manages and supervises a team of accounting professionals. Hires skilled and qualified team members focused on productivity, innovation, employee morale and commitment to the mission of BCC.
  • Provides regular and documented guidance for staff. Completes annual performance reviews for staff in the Finance Department.
  • Ensures staff maintain appropriate certifications and required annual training(s).

How big is the Director's team at BCC?
The Director's team consists of: an AP coordinator, AR coordinator, grant manager, payroll specialist, business coordinator (WV), and a senior accountant. All these roles are currently filled and operational. With the exception of the WV position, all are based out of the organizational headquarters in Baltimore. Finalists for this position will be given full organizational charts and other helpful departmental and organizational information prior to their final interview.
Where is this job based? Is this an in-person position?
This is a full-time, in-person position based out of our Baltimore headquarters. At this time we are not able to accommodate applicants seeking a fully remote or a majority remote role. Travel between all BCC sites is expected on a somewhat infrequent basis.
Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. BCC has a flex schedule policy that may allow this role to shift the start time a little earlier or later in the day. BCC has a telework policy that allows up to one day a week of remote work, with flexibility for life's unpredictable moments and weather. If you have specific scheduling needs they can be discussed with our recruitment team or with the CFO during the interview process.
What does the benefits package look like?

  • Accrue vacation at the rate of 3 weeks per year, plus two floating holidays to use, plus nine paid holidays when BCC is closed. That’s up to 30 days off each year!
