Arizona State University is Hiring a Director of Human Resources Near Tempe, AZ

The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts (HIDA) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Human Resources to lead the HR initiatives within the college. The ideal candidate will provide strategic direction and operational oversight for all aspects of human resources management, fostering a positive and inclusive work environment for faculty, staff, and students. This position is both highly critical to the administration of our HR systems, policies, and procedures, while also modeling service and strategy to solve HR problems in a growing and complex organization.

Essential Duties

Strategy:

  • Develop and implement HR strategies aligned with the mission and goals of the Herberger Institute. Routinely meet with Directors and HIDA leadership to review organizational charts and hiring plans. Work closely with leaders to increase efficiency or effectiveness in their personnel. Create and disseminates data rich reports to better inform planning decisions and advocacy for resources.

Administration:

  • Oversee HR administration functions, including recruitment, payroll, position management, employee leaves, and HRIS activities. Ensure accurate record-keeping and reporting in compliance with university standards. Develop and maintain HR policies and procedures specific to the institute's needs.

Recruitment and Onboarding:

  • Guide the recruitment and selection process for faculty, staff, and student positions, ensuring a seamless and inclusive experience for candidates and hiring managers. Develop innovative strategies to source top talent and promote the institute as an employer of choice. Implement effective onboarding and integration to the Institute.

Employee Engagement and Retention:

  • Implement programs and initiatives to enhance employee engagement, satisfaction, and retention. Conduct regular assessments to measure employee sentiment and identify opportunities for improvement. Serve as a trusted advisor and resource for faculty and staff on HR-related matters. Proactively address employee concerns, conflicts, and grievances; coordinate legal reviews of proposed disciplinary actions. Foster a culture of open communication, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Performance Management:

  • Oversee the performance management process, including goal setting, performance evaluations, and feedback mechanisms. Provide guidance and support to supervisors and employees to promote continuous learning and development. Facilitate the merit exercise in conjunction with the Fiscal and Business Services team.

Leadership:

  • Manage, supervise and train assigned staff and/or student workers and monitor work in progress. Direct supervision of Dean’s Office HR team, and dotted line support of HR staff in schools/units. Review job performance consistent with department and university goals. Develop HR staff through coaching, mentorship, and professional development opportunities. Act as a liaison to the Office of Human Resources to resolve difficult situations.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND eight (8) years of related administrative experience, which includes five (5) years of supervisory experience; OR, Twelve (12) years of related administrative experience, which includes five (5) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working in the education industry
  • Working knowledge of ASU business operations (including but not limited to human resources): Demonstrated knowledge of HR policies and regulations applicable to Arizona higher education organizations (ABOR, staff and faculty policies)
  • Evidence of a professional HR certification (e.g., SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, SPHR)
  • Master's degree in Human Resources Management, Higher Education Administration, or a related discipline
  • Experience leading change management efforts and fostering a culture of resilience and adaptability
  • Experience using Workday’s Human Capital Management system
  • Experience with data analytics, reporting tools, and emerging HR technologies to enhance efficiency and decision-making
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment with competing deadlines
  • Advanced Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to initiate and lead meetings, presentations, and manage complex projects
  • Working knowledge of federal, state and local employment laws and regulations including but not limited to ADEA, FLSA, FMLA, ADA, EEOC, payroll and benefits; and understanding of HR philosophy, objectives, trends, techniques, principles and practices
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of management and employees.
  • Skill in planning, analyzing and coordinating activities and establishing priorities.
  • Skill in problem analysis, problem resolution and decision-making.

Working Environment

  • This position is located on the ASU Tempe Campus; Monday through Friday schedule
  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
  • May be required to perform tasks in the field within and/or across University campuses; some travel to other ASU campuses may be required
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions
  • This position is considered safety/security sensitive and will include a fingerprint check. Employment is contingent upon successful passing of the fingerprint check.
  • Hours beyond the typical 40-hour work week will be required from time to time to complete necessary work responsibilities.
