American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is Hiring a Controller Near New York, NY

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller plays a critical role supporting this vision and will be responsible for oversight of the accounting and reporting operations for the ASPCA’s budget of over $350 million annually. The Controller will lead the Finance team in defining the process and implementing the infrastructure/systems needed to support the current and future growth within the organization. The person in this role will continue to build and manage effective and streamlined financial and accounting systems and is responsible for maintaining ASPCA’s internal control structure. As a key member of the finance leadership team, the Controller will be involved in supporting presentations to the board finance and audit committees and will work closely with the executive leadership team. The Controller will lead all day-to-day accounting operations and directly supervise a team of 15 accounting professionals, including functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and treasury. This position will ensure that the ASPCA has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits. The person in this role will work closely with program leaders and their staffs, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures, but also to explore how the Finance function can support program operations. The Controller will contribute strongly to the leadership team to assist in managing the financial activities of the organization to achieve annual strategic goals and objectives. The Controller reports directly to the SVP & CFO, has 4 direct reports, a total team of 15 , and interacts frequently with senior leaders across the ASPCA. This position is based at the ASPCA 8th Ave office in New York City with the flexibility to work a hybrid schedule, splitting time between 8th Avenue and a remote home office. Responsibilities: Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: Management of Accounting and Reporting (40%): Oversee accounting operations including day-to-day accounting transactions, preparation of periodic financial reports, and maintaining adequate systems of accounting records Coordinate and supervise the activities of the accounting team to ensure the accurate and timely dissemination of financial management reports including internal monthly financial statements and external finance committee reports in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) Manage and maintain a strict deadline to close the financial activities for the month including the preparation and analysis of the monthly Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Activities and Change in Net Assets, and Statement of Cash Flows Prepare monthly and annual financial reporting materials and metrics for ASPCA’s senior management team and assists in the Finance Committee, Audit Committee and Board reports Ensure that all regulations for 501(c) 3 compliance are met, including the filing of the sales tax returns, annual form 5500, charitable giving state filings, annuity reserve filings, and lobby activity reports Oversee the review and completion for all filing requirements for payroll and accounts payable Design, implement, monitor, maintain and enforce internal control systems, policies, and procedures to protect the organization’s assets, mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the organization’s reported financial results Ensure that the organizational compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) Ensure that the ASPCA has the control systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and growth Perform business process reviews and sub-ledger systems interface analysis to provide internal control procedures documentation, system recommendations, and lead implementations Ensures the successful completion of the annual financial statement audit Team Leadership (35%) Manage, develop, and motivate the accounting team through strong communication and engagement which includes clear roles and responsibilities, check-ins and team meetings, and regular bi-directional feedback and career development Provide mentorship and access to subject matter expertise for direct reports, encouraging ongoing growth and development Engage in all necessary activities of the employee lifecycle Help set Finance Team annual objectives, activities, and key results Support team members to set individual annual goals that are aligned to the department’s key results Assist the CFO on the organization’s financial and administrative processes, driving continuous development and systems improvements Partner Cross-Functionally Across the Organization (25%): Partner with the CFO and senior leadership to integrate the Finance function within the organization Work closely with program leaders and their staff to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures and explore how the Control function can support program operations Present on a quarterly basis to the audit and/or finance committees Build and maintain partnerships with key stakeholders across the organization in order to help turn innovative ideas into realizable solutions and bring meaningful insights to decision-making Exemplifies the ASPCA’s Core Values: Has Commitment and dedication to improving the lives of animals Demonstrates Ownership and feels responsible for outcomes Believes in Team – that we are stronger together Seeks to Elevate others and reimagine what is possible Focuses on Impact, specifically making change for animals Education and Work Experience: Bachelor’s in accounting required. Master’s in accounting strongly preferred CPA preferred Minimum of 10 years’ professional experience required Prior management experience required; experience managing managers and supporting indirect reports is a plus Experience as a Controller with a division or organization of over $100 million required Big 4 experience, a plus Experience maintaining professional and technical knowledge in accounting in order to comply with Federal, State, and local legal regulations and file appropriate reports as necessary Experience within complex non-profits where there are multiple divisions is preferred Experience coordinating audit activities and managing ongoing reporting is required Experience incorporating process improvement techniques to streamline financial operations is required Qualifications: Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts into more easily understandable forms, including data visualizations, to support and inform individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers, Ability to manage, develop, and engage a team of 15 professional staff, Advanced knowledge of Federal, State, and local legal financial regulations, Highly flexible and adaptable, with operational growth as well as technology and systems, Keen analytic, organization, and problem-solving skills, which allows for strategic data interpretation, Operate with a positive customer service mindset, Strong communication and relationship building skills, Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and internal controls, Technology savvy with experience overseeing software implementation; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software; Workday and Adaptive Insights highly desirable Language: English (Required) Education and Work Experience: Bachelors: Accounting (Required) Our EEO Policy: The ASPCA is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer.
