City of Virginia Beach is Hiring a Police Cadet Near YSU, VA

The Virginia Beach Police Department is the largest municipal law enforcement agency in Virginia and offers a wide variety of career opportunities. Our Cadet–Patrol Aide program is a steppingstone for those individuals exploring a career in law enforcement. They provide valuable services to the Virginia Beach Police Department in a non-enforcement role. 

Tasks include:

·Assisting at crash scenes by directing traffic and helping safely secure the scenes; assisting citizens with disabled vehicles; assisting with parking enforcement throughout the city; processing abandoned vehicles and found property with no investigative value. 

·Assisting Marine Patrol Unit officers in the enforcement of waterway and beach related ordinances while assigned to a boat captain during summer operations.

·Assisting in monitoring the security camera system for the resort area to proactively identify activity or behavior which necessitates police response, crowd monitoring, observing calls for service to provide additional information to responding units, etc.

·Assisting with traffic and pedestrian direction at public schools and special events throughout the City.

·Assisting with community engagement and other activities at the oceanfront. 

·Assisting with administrative tasks at police facilities, such as answering telephones, processing paperwork, and conducting checks of criminal records.

This is not an exhaustive listing of duties. Cadet–Patrol Aides may serve in other roles, such as assisting the precinct administrative officer; assisting detectives with case management; assisting with the processing/disposal of property and evidence; and other similar work functions designed to afford Cadet–Patrol Aides with a holistic understanding of the workings of a law enforcement agency. 

Additionally, Cadet-Patrol Aides will engage in developmental activities in preparation for becoming a sworn police officer within the department. Examples of developmental activities include participating in a ride along with uniformed patrol, Forensics, or Animal Enforcement; observing operations in the emergency communications center (ECCS); observing officers in court; participating in academy training on constitutional law or other topics of interest; participating in the academy physical training program, including engaging in calisthenics, weight training, plyometric training, aerobic/anaerobic training, etc.; serving as a role player in scenario training; and completing First Aid training, VCIN certification and other relevant training. 

Hours

Cadet–Patrol Aides work an average of 28 hours/week year-round. Shiftwork, including evening/midnight hours, weekends and holidays is required. Work schedules are subject to change based on organizational need. Every effort will be made to provide notice, when possible. 

Disqualifiers: 

The following is a listing of "disqualifiers" or concerns that could result in you not being selected for employment. Please consider these factors before applying. This is not an exhaustive listing.

Criminal History: Conviction of any felony or any crime involving moral turpitude (crimes contrary to justice, honesty, or good morals). Conviction of any Class 1 or Class 2 misdemeanor, excluding traffic violations which are discussed separately, or the Virginia State Law equivalent within the last 5 years. Conviction of domestic assault. Conviction of any misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, including but not limited to petit larceny.

Traffic Violations: Any conviction of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, refusal to take blood or breath test, eluding police, racing, or leaving the scene of an accident within the last 5 years.

Drugs: Any involvement in the sale of illegal drugs as an adult. Any illegal use or possession of any illegal drug, including but not limited to heroin, cocaine, hallucinogens, or any derivative thereof (except marijuana) within the last five years. Illegal possession of anabolic steroids within the last 36 months.
