Job Summary
The Oregon Wine Research Institute (OWRI) is seeking a Winery Manager. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.
The Oregon Wine Research Institute (OWRI) at Oregon State University is dedicated to strengthening research capacity and disseminating results to support the commercial wine industry in Oregon. A key component of this effort is the implementation of research projects that span from the vineyard to the bottle. This position will support an essential step in this process by managing the new state of the art Research and Teaching Winery at OSU and overseeing and coordinating research winemaking for members of the OWRI. This will include ensuring compliance with university policy, state and federal licenses and regulations, and reporting/filing required for legal operation of the Research and Teaching Winery. This position will also support undergraduate education in the winery and engage in enology outreach to the Oregon wine industry.

Key Responsibilities
50% – Management of OSU Research and Teaching Winery

30% Enology Outreach

15% Enology Teaching Support

What You Will Need
BS degree in Food Science, Enology, Fermentation Science or a biological or agricultural related field and two winemaking harvest experiences OR Master’s degree in Enology, Food Science, Fermentation Science or in a biological or agricultural related field
Demonstrate strong decision-making skills, including setting priorities against established criteria and managing multiple projects/activities/deadlines
Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills
A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity
Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with varied audiences such as faculty, students, and industry in a team environment
Laboratory analysis experience
Currently possess or have ability to obtain OLCC License within 60 days of hire
Proficient user of Microsoft Office programs, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
What We Would Like You to Have
Master’s degree in Enology, Food Science, or Fermentation Sciences
Three years’ winemaking experience
Instruction and/or training experience
Experience working with winery data management software such as VinTrace or InnoVint
Mechanical skills and familiarity with operation and repair of winery equipment
Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, rules, regulations, and policies in regard to food processing, facility certification/safety and alcohol production.
Experience with regulatory compliance in the alcoholic beverage industry
Experience developing and managing budgets
Employee supervision or lead work experience
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Working in the research and teaching winery will require physical work. This position will be required to lift, carry, and transport 40lbs. Position requires availability to work a varied schedule and beyond normal business hours during harvest season (September to November) as necessary. Position will occasionally require statewide travel.
