Virginia Commonwealth University is Hiring a Human Resources Generalist Near Richmond, VA

Position Summary:
The Partnership for People with Disabilities (PPD) in the School of Education at Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia's University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD). We are seeking a dynamic candidate for the role of HR Generalist. The HR Generalist will work closely with the HR Director to provide comprehensive human resources support and service to staff.

The Human Resources Generalist will serve as a trusted resource and business partner to others and be responsible for having a general knowledge of multiple HR functional areas, applicable policies, procedures and legal compliance, to positively impact change within the Partnership for People with Disabilities. The important work of this position is grounded in and
committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and engagement.


Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide excellent customer service by utilizing HR expertise to provide guidance to staff in a timely fashion.
• Coordinate HR processes for the unit, addressing and resolving routine HR matters and escalating complex matter to the HR Director.
• Collaborate with managers and provide consultation on job postings and ensure postings are submitted for approval in Talent in a timely manner. 
• Meet with HR Director at least weekly to report and resolve issues, meet with individual staff as needed, host weekly HR office hours, present HR topics at staff meetings, and conduct training sessions for staff.
• Work effectively and efficiently in a high volume environment.
• Coordinate performance management, FMLA, STD, ADA, Payroll, employee relations, Timekeeping, etc.
• Lead all onboarding meetings and provide support to managers with their onboarding responsibilities. Meet with all new staff to complete I-9 process.
• Apply knowledge of University, federal, and state policies to ensure compliance 
• Work with principal investigators and grants team to update HR related information on grant proposals and budgets.
• Assist employees with benefit inquiries, including health, retirement and other employee benefit programs.
• Serve as the HR Associate (HRA) for the unit and consistently participate in HRA meetings; serve on University committees and department committees for continuous learning and sharing best practices.
• Prepare reports on a regular basis including leave, wage, employee list, etc. and review for compliance.
• Maintain excellent recordkeeping in ImageNow and the unit’s designated software.
• Maintain confidentiality and establish trustworthy relationships with customers internal and external to the unit.
• Complete employee separation paperwork in a timely manner and provide support to employees and managers.
• Work with graphics specialist to update and maintain the department HR team’s webpage.
• Serve as department representative on university HR initiatives. 
• May supervise HR Coordinator.
• Train other staff members as needed.
• Serve as timekeeper or reviewer of semi-monthly payroll reports.

Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree and several years of progressive HR experience or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
• Exceptional customer service skills and a high degree of professionalism. including providing timely support.
• Excellent written communication skills with the ability to successfully prepare a variety of HR documents including, but not limited to: job postings, offer letters, HR reports, performance reviews, presentations, forms, etc.
• Must be highly organized and able to oversee record keeping for the HR team.
• Demonstrated ability manage and prioritize a high volume of emails on a daily basis.
• Ability to work at a fast-pace and be productive and efficient with frequently changing priorities.
• Strong experience with recruitment, benefits, compensation, progressive discipline, performance management, FMLA, short-term and long-term disability coverage, etc.
• Ability to learn new skills quickly and demonstrate application of knowledge. within job responsibilities.
• Must be solution oriented and have the ability to utilize a variety of resources to find resolutions to questions.
• Strong ability to synthesize information, provide advice, and address needs independently.
• Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team, complete tasks without immediate supervision, and work with senior leaders to accomplish goals with the ability to lead and train.
• Strong experience working with email software, Microsoft Office, DocuSign, software for posting jobs (example: Cornerstone/Talent), Banner HR or a comparable system for keying HR actions, as well as strong experience using windows or a comparable operating system.
• Must be proficient using Microsoft Excel or Google sheets and Microsoft Word or Google Docs.
• Must be able to work in a cubicle setting (with access to huddle rooms for meetings).
• Ability to manage a complex to-do list and delegate to others as needed.
• Ability to flex or rearrange schedule to get tasks done timely.
• Experience supervising others and writing performance reviews.
• Ability to learn and use project management software daily for tracking tasks.
• Experience working in fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience using VCU HR systems, including, but not limited to: Banner, Cornerstone/Talent, RealTime, DocuSign, etc.
• HR experience in a higher education environment. 
• Experience in general management and supervision of professional staff.
This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule starting with 1 day per week with a gradual increase to 3 days per week with a successful performance.
