Position Summary
UIC Gallery 400 seeks a part-time (14 hours per week) Art Design Chicago Learning Together Engagement Fellow to lead our community engagement and programs ideation and implementation for initiatives related to its Fall 2024 exhibition Learning Together: Art Education and Community. In the first broad telling of Chicago's progressive arts education history, Learning Together centers the art pedagogy of a diverse group of Chicago artist educators from the mid-1970s through the 2010s, highlighting the unique practices of educators working across Chicago's diverse neighborhoods. Artworks co-created by students and educators, sketchbooks, ephemera, and images of public artworks in situ in and around K-12 schools are paired with teaching artists' artwork connected to their work with Chicago's youth. Alongside projects emerging from Chicago Public Schools and alternative schools network, Learning Together highlights art education as activism and community building.

Current plans for engagement activities include formal Convenings for Art Education, which draw in diverse stakeholders from arts education to community organizing to practicing artists to local residents; K-12 field trips and arts education workshops that will bring together teachers and students from paired schools across the city to Gallery 400; visits to and tours of murals and large-scale artworks in situ that complement reproductions exhibited in "Learning Together"; and additional programming, conversations, and collaborations throughout the exhibition.

The Fellow will be the point person on these projects for the gallery's curatorial leadership and for graduate community engagement and programs staff, with whom the fellow will work collaboratively to design and carry out community engagement events leading up to and during the exhibition.
