Truth Initiative is Hiring a Director of Development Near Washington, DC

The Director of Development plays a crucial role in generating revenue to support Truth Initiative’s mission. Reporting to the Head of Development, the Director of Development will be responsible for securing business relationships with government entities, corporations, foundations, and other institutions to drive revenue and expand the impact of Truth Initiative’s programs, with a focus on:
  • Providing our custom, turnkey, fee-for-service solutions for government entities (states, cities, counties, and school districts).
  • Leading the identification, research, and application process for government grants at the federal, state, and local levels.
  • Pursuing philanthropic support from private and corporate foundations.
The role involves engaging externally with potential clients and partners and internally across multiple departments with people at all levels of the organization. The ideal candidate will be an entrepreneurial, proactive, high-performing business development expert with a track record of success in government sales, fee-for-service sales, and/or corporate and private foundation grants.DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES (*ESSENTIAL DUTIES):
  • Business Development:
    • Identify potential partners that share Truth Initiative’s values, have a complementary product or service, are in need of Truth Initiative’s products or services, and/or target a similar market.
      • Strategize and execute plans to secure settlement funding from legal agreements related to tobacco control. Coordinate efforts with legal counsel, ensuring compliance and maximizing funding.*
      • Identify federal, state, and local government grant opportunities via databases such as Bloomberg Government and other activities.*
      • Identify corporate and private foundation prospects and grant opportunities via databases such as Foundation Directory and other activities.*
    • Conduct research on potential partners to further qualify prospects and prioritize outreach efforts.
    • Cultivate potential partnerships and build relationships with representatives from government agencies (including elected officials), corporations, foundations and other relevant stakeholders involved in funding decisions to foster collaboration and trust through phone and email outreach, conferences, speaking engagements, and timely, effective follow up.*
    • Develop effective presentations and deliver via Zoom and in-person meetings at Truth Initiative offices, potential partner offices, or other external locations.
    • Lead development and submission of effective proposals, responses to Request for Proposals, and grant applications that align prospective partner priorities with Truth Initiative goals and capabilities. 
    • In collaboration with the Head of Development, negotiate contract terms and work with legal to execute contracts memorializing client/partner engagements that meet the needs and requirements of both parties.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with internal teams including Marketing, Research, Innovations, Engagement, Finance, Legal, and Communications to refine offerings, ensure effective program delivery, and maximize partnerships revenue and impact.
    • Ensure smooth transition of relationships to account management team to manage execution and renewals.*
  • Activity Tracking and Reporting:
    • Track business development activity in CRM system (Salesforce) and generate regular reports on activity and revenue to Development leadership.*
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 8 to 10 years of government, corporate, and/or foundation business development experience with a track record of success generating 6-8 figure contracts.
  • A keen understanding of best practices at every stage of the business development process and donor cycle.
  • Demonstrated success identifying and qualifying prospects.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to consistently deliver compelling outreach, presentations, and proposals, including proficiency with Microsoft Office programs.
  • Exceptional relationship skills with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with prospects and partners.
  • Experience negotiating contracts, government contracts a plus.
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills and attention to detail to ensure timely follow up and accurate tracking and reporting on activity and revenue (experience with Salesforce, a plus).
  • Ability to work with a wide range of constituents, including government officials, corporate and foundation representatives, and colleagues.
  • Ability to travel periodically for partner/client meetings, conferences, etc. with occasional evening and weekend work required.
This position is based in Washington, D.C. with a hybrid work schedule of 3 days in the office and two telework days.
COMPENSATION PACKAGE:The salary range for this role is starting at $108,000-$120,000 on a national basis. Individual pay decisions are based on a number of factors, including but not limited to qualifications for the role, relevant work experience, skillset, internal equity, location, and certifications, consistent with applicable law. Salary is just one part of our total rewards package which additionally includes equity, performance bonus for eligible roles, and competitive benefits.Interested candidates should submit their cover letter and resume here
