POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Assistant Director of Development will play a key role in developing and implementing the strategic development plan to increase individual and corporate giving. This role will manage and supervise the daily operations of the individual and corporate giving programs, including project management, relationship management, and continually researching funding opportunities. Also, build a pipeline of major donors through the annual fund, assisting with social media strategies, and coordinating special fundraising events. The Assistant Director of Development must be a collaborative and entrepreneurial leader who can support the fundraising team through a uniquely challenging time. This role will report to the Director of Development and work closely with the Chief Strategy & Growth Officer.

A. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

CORPORATE GIVING:

  • Create systems, processes, and policies for the corporate giving program to build AoH’s revenue and expand our visibility.
  • Steward existing corporate partners and identify and cultivate new corporate sources of funding.
  • Prepare and present personalized corporate partnership/sponsorship packages to existing and prospective corporate partners.
  • Write corporate sponsorship proposals as needed.
  • Working with our Advancement Coordinator and key internal stakeholders, create a portfolio of corporate employee engagement opportunities that align with AoH’s mission and strategic goals, including the strategy and marketing materials for these engagement opportunities.
  • Ensure consistent and compelling communications with corporate partners.
  • Track all deadlines in AoH’s CRM for corporate deliverables (reports, proposals, etc.), and support the Director of Development and grant writer in delivering grant proposals and reports for corporate donors.

INDIVIDUAL GIVING:

  • Direct all facets of the AoH Annual Fund to ensure that AoH and Annual Fund objectives are established and met. Implement strategies and action plans that ensure the success of reaching annual fund goals.
  • Help develop acquisition, renewal, and upgrade strategies for donors.
  • Implement and manage direct marketing calendars, including direct mail, e-mail, and social media.
  • Conceptualize, write, and edit annual giving stewardship messages/campaigns for direct mail, email, and social media.
  • Manage direct mail, email, and social media projects with vendors and internal constituents from concept to completion.
  • Request and prepare data for mailing lists; analyze results and report on the progress of the
  • appeals.
  • Lead and manage Black Philanthropy Month, Back-to-School, and Adult Education, and Family
  • Literacy Week Giving Campaigns
  • Assist Director of Development in the cultivation and stewardship of major donors.
  • Monitor all annual fund donor information; provide and present statistical analysis as needed.
  • Track individual donor activity in CRM.
  • Manage and continuously update database records.

DEVELOPMENT OPERATIONS:

  • Provide monthly reports to the Director of Development on individual and corporate giving progress against goals.
  • Work with the Director of Development and Finance team, help with budget development, monitor corporate giving activities, and produce internal and external reports regarding projected and achieved goals.
  • In partnership with the Director of Development, update policies, processes, and procedures for Development operations, including individual and corporate giving and other policies as assigned.
  • Effectively oversee the involvement of the CEO, Chief Strategy & Growth Officer, and other senior staff with major and corporate giving engagement, including preparation of annual pipelines, strategic briefings before visits, and arranging for appropriate follow-up from visits.

RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT AND EVENT PLANNING:

  • Build relationships with internal stakeholders, such as program managers, Performance Evaluation and Research, and Finance teams, to develop and monitor corporate and individual giving goals and project budgets that meet the requirements of each project or funding opportunity.
  • Assist with setting annual and multi-year goals for donor and corporate relations and events in consultation with the Chief Strategy & Growth Officer and departmental leadership team.
  • Assist and manage pre-event planning, day-of-event logistics, and post-event responsibilities.
  • Coordinate invitation lists and mailings, maintain guest lists, gather and prepare registration materials, and perform other duties as assigned for fundraising events.
  • Make follow-up calls to event invitees before the event when necessary.

B. ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

C. OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

Assistant Director of Development

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or at least five years of experience and measurable success in individual giving, including setting and meeting goals;
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and managing successful corporate giving programs.
  • Successful track record of personally identifying, cultivating, and soliciting significant contributions from corporations and individual donors.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • The ability to write corporate giving proposals and fundraising appeals is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to identify, cultivate, and solicit significant contributions.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to leverage fundraising data as a tool are required (familiarity with Salesforce CRM or a similar CRM is preferred but not required).
  • Clear and effective verbal and written communication with various staff, prospects, donors, vendors, and other stakeholders.
  • Highly motivated, goal-oriented, entrepreneurial self-starter who is a strategic and creative thinker who can work independently and, in a team, setting.
  • Ability to articulate the case for support and to interact with corporate giving partners and prospects at the highest level.
  • Highly professional and ethical standards for handling confidential or sensitive information, including knowledge of nonprofit best practices.
  • Understanding Washington, DC, and its philanthropic community is a plus.
  • Understanding adult education, workforce development, and charter sector landscapes is a plus.
  • High energy and passion for AOH’s mission is essential.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The typical schedule is Monday-Friday (8-9 hours per day), with some early mornings, evenings, and weekends as necessary.
  • This position is currently a hybrid position requiring 1-2 days per week in the office. Please note that all staff will be required to be in person M-Th during Fall enrollment.
  • Must be able to withstand extended viewing of computer screens.
  • This position will sit in an open/shared office environment with moderate noise levels.
  • AoH has sites in Wards 5 and 8. This position’s office will be located at the Ward 5 site. Both sites are air-conditioned, wheelchair accessible, and near public transportation

  • Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this position is currently working a hybrid model, telework and on-site. Schedule will be determined by the Chief Strategy and Growth Officer.
