POSITION OVERVIEW:
St John's Community Health (SJCH) is on the frontline of social justice, and we are inviting passionate individuals to join our mission as a Grant-Based Paralegal. This unique opportunity empowers you to make a tangible impact by providing critical legal support to undocumented and transgender individuals who have been victims of crime. As a key member of our Legal Services Program, you will champion justice, advocate for the vulnerable, and contribute to building a more inclusive society. Your work will also support other staff attorneys assisting patients of SJCH with varied legal issues, primarily in Family Law and Immigration.
Grant-based position until December 31, 2024 (Subject to extension by the funder)
BENEFITS
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs a combination, but not necessarily all, of the following duties:
1. Collaborate with the project attorney and staff attorneys to provide comprehensive legal support to immigrant and transgender individuals who have been victims of crime and to the patients of SJCH seeking legal assistance.
2. Conduct interviews/intakes and assessments to understand the unique legal needs of clients.
3. Keep accurate records of intakes and case matters to develop regular reporting for funders.
4. Assist in the preparation and filing of legal documents, including but not limited to immigration petitions, asylum applications, petition for restraining orders, family law petitions and related paperwork.
5. Provide translation and interpretation services, particularly in Spanish, to facilitate effective communication between clients and legal professionals.
6. Assist individuals in filing police reports and gather such reports and other evidence.
7. Conduct legal research to support case preparation and ensure accuracy in documentation.
8. Maintain organized and up-to-date case files, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with legal and ethical standards.
9. Communicate with external agencies, stakeholders, and community resources to enhance support for clients.
10. Manage social media postings and develop marketing and educational materials.
11. Participate in outreach and community education initiatives to raise awareness of legal rights and available resources.
12. Provide legal support to attorneys on other grants.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no supervisory duties.
