As a key member of our Legal Services Program, you will champion justice, advocate for the vulnerable, and contribute to building a more inclusive society. Your work will also support other staff attorneys assisting patients of SJCH with varied legal issues, primarily in Family Law and Immigration.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs a combination, but not necessarily all, of the following duties:

1. Collaborate with the project attorney and staff attorneys to provide comprehensive legal support to immigrant and transgender individuals who have been victims of crime and to the patients of SJCH seeking legal assistance.

2. Conduct interviews/intakes and assessments to understand the unique legal needs of clients.

3. Keep accurate records of intakes and case matters to develop regular reporting for funders.

4. Assist in the preparation and filing of legal documents, including but not limited to immigration petitions, asylum applications, petition for restraining orders, family law petitions and related paperwork.

5. Provide translation and interpretation services, particularly in Spanish, to facilitate effective communication between clients and legal professionals.

6. Assist individuals in filing police reports and gather such reports and other evidence.

7. Conduct legal research to support case preparation and ensure accuracy in documentation.

8. Maintain organized and up-to-date case files, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with legal and ethical standards.

9. Communicate with external agencies, stakeholders, and community resources to enhance support for clients.

10. Manage social media postings and develop marketing and educational materials.

11. Participate in outreach and community education initiatives to raise awareness of legal rights and available resources.

12. Provide legal support to attorneys on other grants.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERINECE

• Bachelor's degree in Paralegal Studies, Legal Studies, English or a related field.
• Paralegal certificate or 1 years of experience.
• Fluent in English and Spanish, with excellent written and verbal communication skills in both languages.
• Previous experience in a paralegal role, preferably in immigration, family law and/or victim assistance.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks, work independently and as part of a team. 
• Ability to take initiative and work with limited supervision. 
• Must have own transportation, valid CA Driver’s license, insurance, and good driving record; travel throughout Los Angeles County may be necessary. 

• Commitment to public interest law: Passion for serving vulnerable populations and promoting social justice.
• Experience in various areas of public interest law with a focus on Immigration and Family Law.
• Experience conducting community and/or street outreach, specifically to hard-to-reach populations.
• Empathy and compassion for individuals facing legal challenges and a commitment to providing high-quality services.
• Proficiency in legal research, document preparation, and case management software is necessary.
• Experience working in underserved communities such as undocumented workers, unaccompanied minors, LGBT populations, communities of color, youth/adolescents, and those experiencing homelessness, substance abuse, and/or mental illness.
