Jobsite Safety Manager

SUMMARY:

The Project Safety Manager is responsible for managing the administration of the Site-Specific Safety Program for the project, ensuring that the right tools, equipment, policies, procedures and programs are in place to assist employees at all levels to work safely. Works directly with site team to enforce corporate, site, and legislative requirements to ensure a safe workplace for all. This position reports to the Vice President of Operations and will take direction from the Corporate Safety Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Continuously monitors the H&S program against trends, new industry practices, legislative changes, business changes and exposure changes to ensure that the program stays current and continues to evolve.
  • Assesses training requirements and delivers the training or sources the appropriate external training provider.
  • Works with the project teams to develop site specific safety plans for each project and provides the necessary tools and training to ensure that these programs are in place and running effectively.
  • Shall conduct comprehensive safety inspections of site for safety compliance. Ensure copies are distributed to the Project site team and Obayashi Corporation Management team.
  • Shall supply and support project staff with safety related materials for regular safety tool box meetings.
  • Shall ensure all project personnel and visitor have adequate training prior to admission to site. Shall maintain all project safety training records and reports.
  • Monitor the H&S programs at each site to ensure consistency with regulations, standard procedures and the site specific plan.
  • Work with the site teams to assist sub-trades and suppliers to address gaps in their safety programs.
  • Follow up on Third party inspections to ensure that specific requirements have been met.
  • Provide weekly safety report for project to Project Manager and Senior Management.
  • Leads the investigation of all accidents/incidents and near misses, including preparing all reports, gathering information, working with OSHA and third party consultants; reporting to Senior Management on the status and taking direction as required.
  • Develop and implement safety communications including CETA Messages, Toolbox Talks, Bulletins etc.
  • Work with management to address safety violations through the disciplinary process.
  • Monitor and analyze site accidents and hazards to identify trends that may provide opportunities for training or improvements to current processes.
  • Develop statistical reporting on accident trends, costs and frequency.
  • Represent Obayashi on various project safety committees.
  • Ensure that all medical aids and lost time injuries are reported within appropriate time frames and that complete/correct information is provided.
  • Develop and monitor return to work programs for injured workers and report to senior management on the status of these programs.
  • The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to those listed above and other duties may be assigned

Education & Work Experience:

  • College degree in related field preferred
  • 10 years of Safety and Safety Management Experience
  • Tunnel or Underground Safety Experience
  • Experience and Training in Hyperbaric Safety
  • Mine Rescue Experience
  • Required Training and Certifications
    • OSHA 10hr & 30hr
    • First Aid & CPR
    • Drug & Alcohol Awareness
    • Confined Space Awareness
    • Scaffold Erection and Inspection
    • CHST
    • CSP preferred
    • Mine Rescue Equipment Trained

Skills:

  • Thorough knowledge of all relevant safety and employment regulations
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong construction site and safety knowledge
  • Experience with MS OFFICE including WORD, Excel and Powerpoint.
  • Attention to detail and ability to recognize discrepancies
  • Ability to manage confidential information

OTHER:

  • Requires navigation of active construction site
  • Frequent travel to job sites for safety inspections, meetings, training, and other Safety services
  • Able to work varied hours
