The Team You’ll Work With
The NYC Innovation Team (I-Team) is a first-of-its-kind team of dedicated, highly-skilled,
interdisciplinary problem-solvers working across departments and communities to unlock creativity
within NYC government to solve big problems and deliver solutions in innovative ways. Around the
world – from Albuquerque to Mexico City to Glasgow – cities are bringing together civic designers,
community engagement specialists, policy experts, data analysts and systems thinkers to inject the
practice of innovation into government as a way to address the most pressing urban challenges,
informed by those that know them best – city residents and those that serve them.

NYC’s I-Team is housed within the NYC Mayor’s Office and is charged with providing ongoing
innovation capacity to tackle major challenges. The NYC I-Team will model creativity and bold thinking,
strengthen collaboration among agencies and across sectors and quickly and effectively deliver policies
and programs that are co-designed by and for New Yorkers. We will work with a broad array of
stakeholders to develop, test, and implement new solutions with speed and agility, achieving a tangible
impact for New Yorkers.

The Problems You’ll Solve
The NYC I-Team seeks one to three (2-3) I-Team Analysts to work closely with a team of 10
interdisciplinary problem-solvers to research persistent challenges, analyze data (including spatial
data), gather best practices from across the globe, and support key stakeholder engagement in order
to co-design effective, impactful solutions to persistent urban problems.

The first of its kind in NYC, the I-Team aims to advance innovative and equitable solutions founded in
research, global best practices, quantitative and qualitative data, and the lived experiences of New
Yorkers. Analysts must be believers in government as a way to solve big problems, curious about ways
to make government work better, and committed to community engagement as a critical foundation
upon which to build effective and equitable solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Researching specific policy areas that are priorities of the City and Mayor;
  • Quantitative and qualitative data gathering and analysis;
  • Supporting the idea-generation process to develop new, innovative solutions;
  • Working closely with partners inside and outside government to understand challenges, and co-
design solutions; and
  • Designing and developing data analysis, information communication, and engagement tools

About You
Successful candidates for the I-Team Civic Designer position will have experience developing
compelling deliverables – infographics, maps, data analytics, multi-media presentations; direct
experience working with government and/or community leaders; and the ability to thoughtfully
communicate with and respectfully engage diverse stakeholders around a shared vision for achieving
results. A dedication to using innovative approaches to finding impactful solutions to the complex
issues facing city governments and taking risks to test bold ideas, while always keeping residents in
mind, is a must.

Applicants who demonstrate outstanding design, engagement, data analysis, research and
interpersonal skills will be of greatest interest. Other qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Public Administration, Urban Planning, Urban
Studies, Multi-media studies, Architecture, Design or related discipline;
  • Three or more years of experience in civic tech, community engagement, graphic design, public
policy, civic design, urban planning, project management and/or related fields/areas
  • Research, graphic design and/or multi-media and/or GIS/mapping skills

Salary
The City of New York Office of the Mayor’s compensation package includes a market competitive
salary, equity for all full-time roles and exceptional benefits. Our cash compensation range for this role
is $80,000 to $100,000.

Final offers may vary from the amount listed based on candidate experience and expertise, and other
factors.
