Hillsdale College is Hiring a Human Resources Generalist Near Hillsdale, MI

Overview

An integral member of the Human Resources team, the Human Resources Generalist functions as a mid-level practitioner with responsibility for a variety of duties central to departmental operations to include but not limited to: recruitment, on-boarding, training and staff development, payroll and benefit administration, employee relations, and the like. Maintains confidentiality and ensures the privacy of protected health information (PHI). 

Responsibilities

  • Assist with all aspects of the on-boarding process to include: conducting/arranging new hire tours, development/delivery/presentation of HR orientation program content, and timely completion of orientation checklists. Oversee mentor/buddy system, post-orientation follow-up, new hire goal-setting/assessment, and feedback surveys. Maintains contact with new hires at various touchpoints.
  • Update and maintain orientation manual.
  • Coordinate periodic leadership training. Recommend topics, procure presenters, and handle behind the scenes details. Maintain training records.
  • Assist HR staff with various payroll functions.
  • Develop in-house expertise around employment benefit plan administration and correctly answer inquiries about employment benefits. Assist faculty, staff and students with completion of forms (electronic and/or paper) relating to employment benefits and payroll.
  • Coordinate annual open enrollment for faculty and staff.
  • Keep abreast of changes in the regulatory climate affecting HR by networking with other HR professionals, reading trade journals, attending seminars/conferences/webinars as appropriate.
  • Perform a variety of manual office procedures to include data entry, operation of fax machine and photocopier, scan and link records using electronic record retention system.
  • Maintain confidentiality. Ensure the privacy of protected health information (PHI), social security numbers, and other indicative date.
  • Perform additional duties as may be assigned by the Associate Vice President of Human Resources or designate.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned competently. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

    Education and Experience

    Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or related field together with three to five years of meaningful experience in the Human Resources arena required. Prior experience in higher education preferred or a combination of education, training, or experience sufficient to demonstrate the ability to perform the job. Credential of Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or Society for Human Resource Management – Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) preferred or completed within two years of employment if lacking.

    Physical Requirements

    Ability to read, write, hear, speak, see and communicate effectively. Ability to operate basic office equipment to include, photocopier, fax machine, adding machine, computer equipment, display monitors and the like. Position is largely sedentary. Occasional lifting of office supplies, booklets, etc. is necessary.

  • Knowledge of Human Resource functions, employment benefits and payroll.2. Possess excellent interpersonal and customer service skills in dealing with faculty, staff, students, and vendors on the phone, via email and in person.3. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to effectively express ideas orally and in writing. 4. Possess good organizational skills. 5. Possess sound judgment and maturity. 6. Possess good computer skills. 7. Must be self-directed and able to work with limited supervision. Ability to make sound decisions and handle difficult personalities and situations independently. 8. Project management skills. 9. Must be comfortable speaking in front of large and small groups.
